March 4 Luncheon to Feature Congressman Mike Turner
Join community leaders and Cleveland Restoration Society friends for a seated luncheon while hearing from our keynote speaker, Congressman Mike Turner (R-OH 10th District) at the 2016 Community Luncheon. An advocate for historic preservation and co-chair of the Historic Preservation Caucus, Congressman Turner introduced the National Historic Preservation Amendment Act of 2015 this past June. Congressman Turner is on the front lines of the Capitol Hill fight to ensure continued support for the Historic Preservation Fund. Mark your calendars for Friday, March 4 from 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. and enjoy a seated luncheon at the Mint Ballroom at The 9. Help prove to Congressman Turner how essential tax credits are to the continued redevelopment of Cleveland and how important his efforts are in Washington.

Sponsorship opportunities are available. Please contact Susan Vincent at 216-426-3106 or [email protected] for more information. Click here for registration.

Heritage Home Program 2015 Recap
Thanks to our many partners, dedicated staff and fantastic homeowners throughout Northeast Ohio, the Heritage Home Program had a strong year in 2015! Not only did the program expand to new communities such as Bay Village and Gates Mills; the program also extended its eligible loan services to fund driveway repairs (when coupled with another project) and set record-breaking numbers in providing technical assistance and site visits to homeowners across Northeast Ohio in 2015:
  • Participating wards in the city of Cleveland: 14
  • Total participating cities in Northeast Ohio: 41
  • Inquiries from homeowners: 3,268
  • Technical assists to homeowners: 1,562
  • Site visits with homeowners: 1,438 (about 120 site visits per month!)
  • Loans signed: 117
  • Total loans combined value: $5,016,566.55
The Heritage Home Program offers free technical assistance and low-interest loans to homeowners in participating cities. Technical assistance is considered the heart and soul of the program, and includes site visits from construction specialists to answer any questions about home maintenance, repair and remodeling, contractor referrals, assistance with bid reviews and more! In addition, fixed rate, low-interest Heritage Home loans can be used toward the maintenance and improvements of older houses. The Heritage Home Program looks forward to another great year in 2016!

Huntington Building
Round 15 of Tax Credits Awarded
Rejoice with CRS as we celebrate continuing historic redevelopment in Cleveland after the recent round of historic tax credits announced by the Ohio Development Services Agency in December. Five projects in Northeast Ohio were awarded tax credit allocations in Round 15. Cleveland landmark projects utilizing tax credits are the former Lake Shore Bank and St. Clair Branch of the Cleveland Public Library, the Huntington Building at 925 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland Athletic Club Building at 1118 Euclid Avenue, the Forest City Bank and adjoining Seymour Block buildings at 2513-2519 Detroit Avenue in Ohio City, and the Heyse Apartments at 1702 W. 28th Street. The Huntington Project was awarded a credit of $25 million, more than the maximum of $5 million typically allocated. The first deadlines for Round 16 are approaching in February.

Historic Tax Credit Impact Report
The Ohio Development Services Agency has released a report on the impact of the Ohio Historic Preservation Tax Credit program on communities across the state. As an economic development tool, the program encourages private investment in the reuse of historic buildings. The rehabilitation of historic buildings creates construction and permanent jobs, provides unique spaces for residents and businesses, promotes heritage tourism, adds to state and local tax revenues and revitalizes communities.

Action Agenda Released
Action Agenda cover

Last month we celebrated the public release of the 2014 Legacy Cities conference-inspired publication Action Agenda for Historic Preservation in Legacy Cities. The Action Agenda premiered during a Legacy Cities event in Newark, New Jersey that was attended by CRS President Kathleen Crowther. The Action Agenda was designed to address three concerns: shape a new approach to preservation in legacy cities, adapt preservation tools and policies to meet the needs of legacy cities, and support place-based collaboration.

Jewish Federation Demolished
Jewish Federation Building

We are sad to note the demolition of the Jewish Federation of Cleveland building on Euclid Avenue and the adjacent Rogers Building in December 2015. CRS had hoped a new use could be found for the former headquarters of the Jewish Federation, which was designed by American architect Edward Durell Stone. Plans have been approved for the site to be developed as new apartment housing for college students.

Ohio & Erie Canalway National Heritage Area Funding Extended
Originally only funded until 2012, the Ohio & Erie Canalway National Heritage Area has received additional funding until 2021, with an extension from $10 million to $15 million, although only $1 million can be released per year. The 2016 Omnibus Appropriations bill allowed the funding cap to increase further to $17 million. Its funding was contingent on two things: developing a management plan within three years and maintaining a local match of 1:1 per $1 spent by the federal government. The Ohio & Erie Canalway National Heritage Area was created in 1996.
