SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY -  HOLYOKE

NOVEMBER 30, 2013

Here's an idea . . . .

Let's buy Christmas presents from small local businesses and self-employed people.  For example, from your neighbor who sells online, a local craftsperson who makes jewelry, the stunning local florist shop, the local bakers that do homemade cakes, buns, and chocolates.  The guys that runs a café or a salon.

Lets' make sure our  money goes to individual people and not multinational companies.  This way, more local people will have a better Christmas  . . . .  Support Real People.   "Like" or share if you think this is an awesome way to show community support.

All businesses who join will be in a raffle for one of 4 Small Business door mats.  Post cards are also available.

For more information please visit the Holyoke Small Business Facebook Event page or contact Christine at 413-538-9492 or Clowntique@yahhoo.com.

Holiday Holyoke opening on Black Friday

Holiday Holyoke Pop-Up Shop

56 Suffolk Street in Holyoke (Bank Hall in the Hadley Falls Trust Building)

Open 11am-7pm Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 11/29 until 12/23

After last year's success, the Holiday Holyoke Pop Art Shop is back! Again, local artists and community organizers will transform an unused downtown space into a unique retail experience for the season. This year, instead of just one weekend, the shop will open its doors on Black Friday (11/29/13) and for each weekend until Christmas - with its closing day on Monday, December 23rd.

"After consulting with last year organizers, Hillary Pollan and Octavia Anderson, I decided to take it on" said Cynthia Espinosa, lead coordinator and this year's shop manager. "It is my love of this season and my passion for empowering the community that compelled me to do this - and it's an opportunity to help spread the joy."

The shop will feature original works of art and handcrafted items produced locally by both hobbyists and professionals. Unique gifts options will range from jewelry, paintings, ornaments, and soap to furniture, photographs, sculpture, clothing and much more. Traditional holiday activities, representing the various cultures of Holyoke are planned throughout the month as well.

"We expect over 30 artist and craft makers will participate - not just from Holyoke but from the surrounding communities too - there will be something for everyone." said Espinosa.

Holiday Holyoke has been made possible this year thanks to the generous support of the Holyoke Creative Arts Center and the Massachusetts International Festival for the Arts (MiFA / Victory Theatre).

For more information, visit Holiday Holyoke online at www.facebook.com/holidayholyoke or contact Cynthia Espinosa at popupshop01040@gmail.com

Holyoke Police Holiday Crime Prevention Tips

Holyoke Police Chief James Neiswanger provides the following "Holiday Crime Prevention Tips" in the hopes of preventing many of these situations during the holiday season. Shoppers may be so busy that they fail to be aware of their surroundings. Careless or unaware shoppers are easy pickings for purse snatchers and street robbers.

Chief Neiswanger advises to scan your immediate area; don't assume that you are secure because there are people around you.

"Every good police officer is trained to read the environment. Likewise, you should ask yourself questions about your surroundings when you are out and about," The Chief says.

For example, when you are in a parking lot or garage, be alert to someone who appears to be standing around for no good reason. He or she might be waiting for someone - or that person could be an opportunist waiting to grab your shopping bags or your purse.

Shopping

  • Always walk and park in well-lit areas. Park close to the entrance of the store or mall, if possible.
  • Don't talk on a cell phone when walking through parking lots and streets. Your phone conversation is a distraction that makes you vulnerable to robbers. Keep your full attention on your surroundings. Also, your cell phone itself can be a tempting target to thieves.
  • Don't electronically unlock your vehicle until you are within door opening distance. This helps stop a thief from getting into the car and waiting to strike when you least expect it.
  • If you are ready to leave the mall and feel uneasy about entering the parking lot or garage by yourself, stay in the mall and ask for a security escort.
  • Do not open your car door to anyone in a parking lot or garage. If you believe you are in danger, call 911 immediately.
  • Outside of the mall, stick to well-lit, well-traveled streets, walkways and parking areas for both walking and parking.
  • Don't flash large amounts of cash or offer tempting targets for theft such as expensive jewelry or clothing.
  • Carry a purse or shoulder bag close to your body, not dangling by straps. Put a wallet in an inside pocket of your coat or front pants pocket.
  • Don't fumble for car keys. Have them in your hand, ready to use when you reach the car.
  • If you believe someone is following you, cross the street, switch directions, walk into a store or restaurant. If you are really scared, yell. Don't be embarrassed. Your safety is more important.
