Holyoke Machine
Company
In 1863, Holyoke Machine Company was organized for the purpose of making castings and shafting, and to provide general mill work and machining services.
From its beginnings, the business has continued to grow and prosper providing additional products such as water wheels and gearing. The casting department, now long gone, cast the doors for the U.S. Capitol Building. In time, the market expanded from Western Massachusetts to all of New England, then the Southern States, California, north into Canada, and across the Atlantic into Europe.
Holyoke Machine's commitment to excellence produced the Boyden Improved Fournayron Turbine, the Risdon Improved Turbine, and the Dayton American Turbine, the Gould Pulping Engine, Balls' Steam Stamping Engine, Littlefield Pumps, Hydraulic Presses, the Holyoke Elevator, and the Web Super Calender. The improved calender rolls and machinery continued Holyoke Machine's expansion.
In 1948 the Sagalyn family, headed by Irwin Sagalyn, who remains the Chairman of the Board of Holyoke Machine, began the conversion of the company into a modern firm providing design, manufacturing, and repair services to the paper, textile, magnetic tape, and water power industries. Today James Sagalyn, Irwin's son, is the President and CEO of the company.
Their market is now international with customers in Asia, Malaysia, Australia, and South America.
Keeping pace with technology has allowed Holyoke Machine to develop new products such as the E-Z-MBOSSä roll.
Over the years the firm has sought out employees with intelligence and a sound education. Then, through our apprentice programs, we developed the skilled workforce needed to manufacture, maintain, and repair the rolls and machinery needed by our customers. Their commitment to excellence extends not only to their products and service to customers, but to Holyoke Machine's employees as well.

The March of Dimes Massachusetts Chapter and Holyoke Medical Center are pleased to announce that Brian Couchon of Holyoke Medical Center has been named "Nurse of the Year" by The March of Dimes in the category of Labor and Delivery. This elite distinction was awarded at a ceremony held at the VERVE - Crowne Plaza Hotel in Natick on October 7, 2013.
"I was shocked," said Couchon. "I was there with nurses from hospitals all over the state so it was quite an honor to be chosen. This award is also a testament to Holyoke Medical Center and my nurse manager Ginny Thomas who provided me the unique opportunity for a male nurse to work in labor and delivery. All my coworkers are such a great team and I share this award with them."
The Nurse of the Year Awards is a statewide event that recognizes exceptional nurses, creates awareness of professional excellence and promotes the future of the nursing profession, while helping to advance the mission of the March of Dimes. The Nurse of the Year selection committee reviewed applications in the categories of: Advanced Practice, Community Health, Public Health, Education, Neonatal, Nurse Researcher, Administration, Pediatric, Family Medicine, Women's Health, Student Nurse, Maternal/Newborn, Labor and Delivery and Anti-Partum. BOOK COVER COLLAGES AT THE WESTFIELD ATHENAEUM
Dean Nimmer and Janet Stupak have a fascination with the graphics and patinas of antique book covers. They rescue the books from flea markets, thrift shops and recycling centers to be re-purposed and admired as art. Art Deco covers embellished with gold or silver, simple colored backs, the exterior and even the ragged interior of the spines, provide inspiration. So many wonderful cover images with titles in fantastic stylistic fonts to play with and enjoy!"
This October the Library's exceptional Rand Art Gallery will be displaying over 20 of these unique "Book Cover Collages."
The Westfield Athenaeum, located at 6 Elm Street, (413) 568-7833, is open Monday-Thursday, 8:30 a.m. - 8 p.m., Friday and Saturday 8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m. They are also participating in a unique show called "Valve" at the PCS 80 gallery, 80 Race St. in downtown Holyoke that opens this Friday, 6 to 9pm. This will be an interesting show that's roughly based on "Steam Punk" art, with artists, Bruce Fowler, Gary Hallgren, Denis Kitchen, Rob Kimmel, Amber Krawczyk, Adam Mulcahy, James Presnell and Dean Nimmer.
Please do come and see the new work!
