The profitability numbers are in, and even though print advertising takes up less of the revenue pie than ever, b-to-b publishers continue to keep their print products profitable, with average margins (including company-wide expenses) in the 18 percent to 20 percent range. However, traditional media companies continue to grow their digital -- especially mobile -- business, and many are branching out with expanded conference and trade show offerings. The proof: event revenue now accounts for 35 percent of total revenue for reporting ABM members, compared with 30 percent from print and 28 percent from online. At last week's inaugural Code Conference, hosted by Re/code, Mary Meeker of Kleiner Perkins Caulfield & Byers (KPCB) presented her annual Internet Trends report. Available as a slideshow on

Trade Show Industry Grows 2.6 Percent In Q1 2014

 

According to recently-released data compiled by the Center for Exhibition Industry Research (CEIR), the U.S. trade show industry grew 2.6 percent year-on-year in the first quarter of 2014. The growth exceeded domestic GDP growth by 0.6 percentage points, leading to a quarter that CEIR economists called "surprisingly strong." Read more.



  

ABM has partnered with the Internet Advertising Bureau to offer a comprehensive digital sales training certification program which provides ABM digital sales teams and their companies with benchmarks that demonstrate a deep understanding of the process of creating digital media packages for their advertisers. The Alliance for Audited Media (AAM) has announced a merger with the Interactive Media Services Group, or ImServices. Effective as of May 30, the union ensures that AAM will have access to ImServices' complete array of interactive media auditing services. The goal is for the full range of both companies' capabilities to provide solutions for the challenges facing advertisers in an increasingly fast-moving digital environment. Read more.

Top Media Moves 
 

Northstar Travel Media has announced the purchase of a majority stake in Inntopia, a provider of cloud-based hospitality reservation solutions. This acquisition is the latest in a long line of such moves from Northstar as the company seeks to extend its global reach. AdditionallyBruce Shulman, formerly associate publisher of Northstar's Retail Group, has been promoted to publisher of the division. Jay Nelson will take the role of associate publisher/business development, reporting directly to Shulman.

 

The Government Executive Media Group has announced that Camille Tuutti has been appointed executive editor of Nextgov, the company's government tech brand. She will also helm the Nextgov Prime event, to be held in Washington, D.C., in September.

 

Prometheus Global Media, publisher of Adweek, The Hollywood Reporter and Billboard, has purchased Mediabistro for a disclosed $8 million. CEO Alan Meckler will resurrect his '90s outfit Mecklermedia using Mediabistro's trade show division, to which he has retained the rights.
