NEWS FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Beloved Members of the Nolan Catholic Community:
Greetings of Peace!
We have had a wonderful start of the new school year. It is very nice to have students back in our hallways. I hope you have had an opportunity to view our new website. If not, click here to access the site. It was developed using a responsive design which means it views easily on smartphones and tablets. Yesterday we welcomed His Excellency Most Rev. Michael F. Olson, D.D. as he celebrated our opening school liturgy. We feel blessed to have our shepherd on campus. We will celebrate all-school liturgies every Thursday from 10-11 a.m. in Hartnett Arena, and visitors are always welcome.
We have a busy August with upcoming events including the mandatory Life of An Athlete and Play Like A Champion Today Athletic Department meeting on Aug. 20, and Back-to-School Night on Aug. 27.
The Science Department also has planned a superb Universal Reading Day for students on Aug. 27 to discuss our summer reading book, Endangered, and gain more insight into the book's themes. For more upcoming events and important dates, please see the Important Dates section in this newsletter. Our first late start will be next Thursday, Aug. 21. Students will report to their F-period class at 8:30 a.m. We use this time each week for our faculty to meet as part of their departmental Professional Learning Communities.
I am extremely positive about the upcoming year. I encourage you to have your student take advantage of all we offer here at Nolan Catholic that will help them develop spiritually, academically, physically, and socially. Thank you for entrusting your children to us and please contact me or any of our administrators if you need anything. God Bless You and Your Family,

Students, Veteran Parents, and Administrators Provide Tips and Useful Info to New Parents
Last Sunday, Nolan hosted a new parent welcome social. The purpose of the event was to give new parents a chance to meet other new parents, hear about ways to become involved at Nolan, and learn some Viking terms. Student Ambassador officers shared a few useful tips that will help the new parents navigate through their child's freshman year at Nolan. Some veteran parents shared some of their experiences as new parents to Nolan and encouraged parents to "get involved." Another sobering reality was in how fast these high school years will go by, so to make the most of their time here. Pictured above is Principal Benedict V. Reyes speaking to new parents. Bishop Olson Celebrates Opening School Liturgy The Nolan Catholic community celebrated its opening school liturgy on Thursday. Bishop Michael Olson celebrated the Mass and welcomed new students and welcomed back returning students. This year, Nolan will celebrate all-school liturgies weekly as an opportunity for students, parents, faculty, and staff to deepen their relationship with Christ through worship as a community and through partaking of the Eucharist. Freshmen Meet And Learn How to be Vikings
Last week, incoming freshman students had an opportunity to meet their classmates, tour the school and find their classrooms, and have some fun while learning about their new school. A total of 199 freshmen participated in LINK Crew freshman orientation. LINK Crew is moderated by Mr. Michael Edghill and Mrs. Gaye Houk, who are assisted by junior and senior LINK Crew leaders. For more pictures, click here.

Freshmen and New Students Serving in a Ministry Role Must Participate in Training Program
All teens presently serving in any ministry role in the church must participate in the Keeping Children and Youth Safe Training Program for Teens only. Nolan provides this training for all of our incoming freshman students, as well as the new upperclass students transferring into the school, as a means of introducing them to the requirement that they perform community service as part of the Nolan Catholic curriculum, and to prepare them for actually serving in a variety of ways in the community.
We will be conducting this training during the week of August 25 - 29, 2014. Your student will bring home a copy of the documentation of their participation in the training; you can provide that documentation to your parish so that your student will not have to repeat the training to participate in ministry within the parish.
The training is comprised of two components, as follows.
Teen Leader Training: This workshop prepares youth ages 13-18 (still in high school) who wish to volunteer with their peers and/or with children. We are conducting this training during the week of August 25 -29.
"Called to Protect for Youth" Safe Environment Training for Children and Youth: The "Called to Protect" Program is designed for children and youth, Pre-K through grade 12, to teach them about boundaries, how to recognize boundary violations, how to respond to persons who violate their boundaries, and how to report any such violations to parents, family members, and other trusted adults.
We understand that some students may have already participated in the one or both components of the Keeping Children and Youth Safe Training Program at their local parish or Catholic school; however, we are asking the students to participate again with their fellow classmates and to share their ministry experiences as part of our class discussion.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Toni Corbett at tcorbett@nchstx.org or DeDe Barth at dbarth@nchstx.org.
