Kristina Gjerde worked with partners to organize a well-attended side event at the IMO MEPC 64th session in London on Thursday 4 October. The program included Simon Walmsley (WWF) and Capt. Harry Gale (Nautical Institute) introducing the Sargasso Sea poster as part of a wider effort to educate seafarers on areas of environmental importance and the need to take care of the high seas; Dr. David Freestone and Professor Howard Roe describing the Sargasso Sea Alliance, the importance of the Sargasso Sea based on the Science Case, and recent progress in other international arena.
Over 50 participants attended from a wide range of states and organizations, including Kuwait, Liberia, Trinidad and Tobago, Sweden, Turkey, Australia, Ecuador, Argentina, New Zealand, Japan, Nigeria, Bangladesh, Germany, Jamaica, Norway, Denmark, UK, Singapore, Netherlands, Ireland, Marshall Islands, Russia, Iceland and Israel, as well as the American Chamber of Shipping, the Clean Ship Coalition, WWF, Friends of the Earth International (FOEI), International Emissions Trading Association (IETA), Cruise Line International Association (CLIA), International Council of Marine Industry Associations (ICOMIA), The Institute of Marine Engineering, Science & Technology (IMarEST), and the IMO Secretariat.
The Sargasso Sea Summary Science and Evidence Case was submitted as an Information Document in advance of the MEPC meeting, reflecting the first official submission to this entity.
