Facilities Update

Little Diversified Architectural Consulting held another work session with the Board of Education on May 14, 2012. The video of this meeting will be available in the coming week on the Facilities Updates page of the district website. During this meeting, Little presented the revised layout and elevation renderings of a new classroom/administrative building at Davie County High School. The local current expense budget for 2011-12 adopted by the Board of Commissioners was contingent upon the Board of Education developing a plan for up to $6 million in renovations at Davie County High School. This building will be a short-term solution to a long-term facility issue, and will eliminate the 23 mobile units used as classrooms today. The architects are developing construction drawings and plan to take the project to bid in September 2012. The approximate cost of this building is $5.4 million. Construction and renovations will include a new main office, guidance department, and 24 classrooms. Construction will take approximately one year. The architect also discussed preliminary estimates to renovate the locker rooms. While a more detailed plan is necessary, preliminary estimates exceed $1.5 million. The locker room renovations combined with the classroom/administrative building exceed the $6 million budget, so the locker room renovations will be discussed at a later date.

Tomas Eliaeson, Design Director at Little, shared a 21st Century learning and design presentation, The Immersive Learningscape. Tomas is a national expert in designing 21st century learning environments and shared with the Board of Education a presentation he has shared with architects and designers across the country. This thought-provoking presentation provided a window into designing classrooms similar to what are found in retail business design today, and aligned with best practices incorporated into school design in 2012 and the future.

The budget presentation he used, as well as the Superintendent's Budget Message, Budget Resolution, Local Budget Analysis, and Capital Outlay Requests submitted to the Board of Commissioners, can be accessed on the Budget Updates page of the district website.
