Welcome to the first edition of School Matters from Davie County Schools. School Matters is a new, electronic news source for parents, community members, and staff. Please share School Matters with others! This first edition includes three significant topics: a school facilities update, a budget update, and a reminder about the upcoming election.

School Facilities Update

School facilities have been a topic of conversation in Davie County for years. On the School Facilities Updates page of our district website, you will find information related to the Facilities Assessment and Long Range Plan developed by Little Diversified Architectural Firm. Visit this page to learn more about this report or watch the architect's presentation to the Board. The architects are developing proposals related to Davie County High School and will be presenting scenarios to the Board of Education on Tuesday, April 17, 2012, at 3:30. You are invited to a Public Forum to discuss the school facilities needs in Davie County on Thursday, April 19, 2012, from 6:30 to 8:30, at the Brock Auditorium in Mocksville. Questions may be submitted before April 16th by clicking on 04/19/12 Public Forum Questions in the Quick Links box to the left. Members of the audience will also be given an opportunity to ask questions at the forum on April 19th. The avenues for consideration, and recommendations and conclusions from the architectural firm may also be found on our Schools Facilities Updates page. Click on the School Facilities Updates in the Quick Links box to the left for all of the details.

Budget Update

Educators in the public schools of North Carolina continue to do more with less. During the 2012-13 budget cycle, we will again be forced to address significant budget cuts and reduce the number of employees in our district. Earlier this week, I gave the Board of Education an overview of the budget situation and trends from the federal, state, and local levels. This budget discussion presentation from the April 3, 2012 Board of Education meeting can be accessed on the Budget Updates page from the Quick Links box to the left.

We are often asked why the NC lottery does not solve our budget issues. I ran across an article highlighting some of the current concerns surrounding the allocation of lottery revenue in North Carolina; this article is also posted to our Budget Updates page.

May Primary Election

On May 8, 2012, please exercise your right to vote. Three new members of the Board of Education will be elected during the primary, and will take office in July, 2012. Along with the Board of Education election, we will have the opportunity to vote for candidates at the local, state, and national levels. Our elected officials make decisions that affect the future of our community and public education; I encourage you to learn more about each candidate before voting.

We hope you find School Matters to be an informative and useful resource. Thank you for your continued support of Davie County Schools!

Sincerely,
