Hunting & Fishing Expenditures
Rival Biggest Companies
A coalition of hunting and fishing groups and the outdoor industry briefed members of the Congressional Sportsmen's Caucus recently on the rise in hunting and fishing participation in this country. The groups, led by the Congressional Sportsmen's Foundation, National Shooting Sports Foundation, Cabela's, Safari Club International, American Sport fishing Association and National Marine Manufacturers Association, used recently released data from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's 2011 National Survey on Fishing, Hunting and Wildlife Associated Recreation to compare hunting and fishing participation and expenditures to mainstream industries.
"To put it in perspective, the 37 million sportsmen and women over the age of 16 in America is the same as the population of the state of California, and the $90 billion they spent in 2011 is the same as the global sales of Apple's iPad and iPhone in the same year," commented Jeff Crane, president of the Congressional Sportsmen's Foundation. "Hunting and fishing have been, and clearly continue to be, important elements of our country's outdoor heritage and they are critically important to our nation's economy - particularly the small local economies that support quality hunting and fishing opportunities." Most notable is that hunters and anglers continued their strong spending habits. From equipment expenditures ($8.2 billion for hunters, $6.2 billion for anglers) to special equipment ($25 billion towards boats, RVs, ATVs and other such vehicles) to trip-related expenses totaling over $32 billion, sportsmen and women continue to direct their discretionary income toward their outdoor pursuits. NSSF Urges Calls over Sportsmen's Act
NSSF encourages all firearms owners, hunters and sportsmen to immediately call their U.S. Senators and urge them to vote "Yes" on a critically important procedural motion that will allow the Senate to take up the Sportsmen's Act (S.3525) after the November election. The bipartisan Sportsmen's Act is the most important single piece of pro-sportsmen legislation in a generation. This historic legislation includes the firearms industry's top legislative priority, the Hunting, Fishing and Recreational Shooting Protection Act (S.838), which would clarify that ammunition is excluded from regulation by the Environmental Protection Agency under the Toxic Substances Control Act. This historic, bipartisan legislation is strongly supported by the National Shooting Sports Foundation and over 40 of the nation's leading sportsmen and conservation groups like the NRA, Congressional Sportsmen's Foundation, Ducks Unlimited, U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance and the Boone and Crockett Club. The Sportsmen's Act, a package of 19 separate bills including the majority of sportsmen's legislative priorities in this Congress, was passed by the House in April by a bipartisan vote of 276 to 146. Eventual passage of this unprecedented pro-sportsmen's legislation will promote, protect and preserve our nation's hunting, shooting and conservation heritage for generations to come. |
Beretta M9 Wins US Army Contract
The US Army will be buying 100,000 M9, 9mm caliber, pistols. An initial order for over 4,600 pistols has already been released to the company. All of the pistols will be manufactured at the Beretta USA facility in Maryland, where an American work force of nearly 300 employees has been making M9 pistols since 1987. To date, over 600,000 Beretta 9mm pistols have been delivered to the U.S. military. "This order reconfirms the US Armed Forces' interest and support of the M9 pistol. The Beretta M9 remains the standard sidearm of the US Army", commented Cav. Ugo Gussalli Beretta, President of Beretta Holding, "These pistols will support American troops in the field for years to come." Beretta, established in 1526, is the oldest industrial dynasty in the world tracing its roots through 15 generations of continuous family ownership. Firearms bearing the Beretta name have been sold for almost 500 years. Beretta USA Corp., a Beretta Holding company, was founded in 1977 and supplies the standard sidearm to the U.S. Armed Forces. |

Colorado Outfitter Convicted on
Lacey Act Violations
The Department of Justice announced Dennis Eugene Rodebaugh, 72, of Meeker, Colorado, has been convicted by a federal jury in Denver of six charges of violating the Lacey Act. Rodebaugh operated a Colorado big game outfitting business called D&S Guide and Outfitter beginning in 1988, offering multi-day elk and deer hunts to many non-resident clients in the White River National Forest for between $1,200 and $1,600. The indictment alleged that each summer between 2002 and 2007, the defendant outfitted numerous clients, on hunts in which deer and elk were shot from tree stands near which Rodebaugh placed hundreds of pounds of salt each spring and summer as bait. The placement and use of bait to aid in the taking of big game is unlawful in Colorado. The interstate sale of big game outfitting and guiding services for the unlawful taking of big game with the aid of bait constitutes a felony violation of the Lacey Act. Each of the six felony counts carries a maximum punishment of five years imprisonment and up to a $250,000 fine. Rodebaugh also forfeited two all-terrain vehicles and a utility trailer.
