Editorial: On Target Radio
David A. Lombardo
It's hard to believe but the greater metropolitan Chicago area has no gun radio show despite having a population of 9.7 million people. There are fishing shows, outdoor shows and shows of every other imaginable theme but the Second Amendment is silenced.
For about two years I have been talking with AM560 WIND about producing a gun talk show. It's Chicago's major conservative talk radio station and features Glenn Beck, Dennis Miller, Michael Medved, Steve Cochran, Hugh Hewitt, Dennis Prager and Mike Gallagher. WIND isn't a small neighborhood station; its signal goes from Southern Wisconsin down to Champaign and from Northwest Indiana out to Rockford. AM560 covers the entire metropolitan area and significantly beyond.
WIND has been very encouraging and supportive of the On Target Radio concept and we now have a great time slot they're holding for us: 9:00 p.m. Sunday nights immediately following Geoff Pinkus' The Man Show.
Don Mastrionni, president of Illinois Gun Works in Elmwood Park, John Riggio, president of Chuck's Gun Shop in Riverdale, the Illinois State Rifle Association and SAFER USA have all become sponsors. I'd like you to support those great businesses and be sure to join the ISRA as they're the only organization that fights for the rights of Illinois firearm owners.
On Target Radio is slated to go on the air at 9:00 pm., Sunday, September 16 but we still need one more sponsor to make it work. We have a sponsorship package offering several advertising options starting as low as $100 a week. For Chicago to have a premier Second Amendment radio talk show we need one more sponsor to partner with us to support it.
There are only a few days left for us to find that sponsor or Chicago will continue to have no Second Amendment voice during a time that will see the most significant election in our lifetime with respect to the Second Amendment. |
Hunter-ed.com Lessons Now in Spanish
The hunter safety course available through www.hunter-ed.com now offers professional narration in Spanish. Students can choose to listen to the lessons in Spanish as well as English or they can elect to turn off the narration feature and read. "With hunting seasons opening up across the country, now is a great time for students to take that first step in completing their hunter safety course," said Kurt Kalkomey, president of Kalkomey Enterprises, Inc. "By expanding our optional narration feature at hunter-ed.com to include Spanish, even more people can get their hunting license and enjoy time afield with friends and family." Another benefit of hunter-ed.com is students can take this hunter safety course on any device, including smartphones and tablets. Because hunter-ed.com is mobile-ready, students have access to the course even if the only way they have to connect to the Internet is via their smartphone. Studying at hunter-ed.com is free. Students who must be certified before buying a hunting license pay a one-time fee, which is due only if they pass the test. Online hunter safety courses are available in participating states, so visit hunter-ed.com for a state-specific course.

More Suspected Rhino Poachers
Nabbed At Kruger Park
Four suspected rhino poachers were arrested this week during an anti-rhino poaching operation in South Africa's Kruger National Park. According to a statement released by the South African National Parks (SANParks), three of the arrested suspects were fatally wounded. On Monday, at Shangoni Section in the Kruger National Park, SANParks Rangers and investigators came into contact with a group of suspected poachers. One of the suspected poachers was fatally wounded. A firearm and a set of rhino horns were recovered. On the same day in the Lower Sabie, three suspected poachers were arrested and a firearm and an axe were recovered. In a follow-up anti-poaching operation at Crocodile Bridge on Tuesday, Rangers came into contact with another group of suspected poachers, where one suspected poacher was wounded and two were fatally wounded, again another firearm and two axes were recovered. This year 152 rhino have been poached with 49 arrests in Kruger National Park alone. |
U.N. Programme of Action Targets
Civilian Gun Owners
Gun owners hoping the failure of the United Nations Arms Trade Treaty in July would finally convince the UN to respect our rights shouldn't hold their breath. Just a month after treaty negotiations broke down; on August 27 the UN convened its two-week-long Second Review Conference of the UN Programme of Action on Small Arms and Light Weapons. The POA was established in 2001, ostensibly to combat the illicit trade and use of small arms by developing an internationally accepted set of standards for dealing with the issue, as well as by encouraging states to adopt domestic controls over the manufacturing and distribution of firearms and report on their progress. While states may agree to work towards the goals of the POA it is not binding but consider the recommendation for gun registration in the U.N. International Small Arms Control Standards which requires firearm registration and a centralized database administered by a State authority." ISACS has yet to be completed, but upcoming international standards the POA will promote include "National controls over the end-user and end-use of internationally transferred small arms and light weapons" and "National controls over the access of civilians to small arms and light weapons." Fortunately, ISACS was rejected as part of the POA in the just-concluded conference. [Source: NRA/Institute of Legislative Action] |

Democratic Platform Calls for More Restrictions
on Gun Owners' Rights
The 2012 National Democratic Platform, supported by President Barack Obama, details gun owner's future. "We recognize that the individual right to bear arms is an important part of the American tradition, and we will preserve Americans' Second Amendment right to own and use firearms. We believe that the right to own firearms is subject to reasonable regulation. We understand the terrible consequences of gun violence; it serves as a reminder that life is fragile, and our time here is limited and precious. We believe in an honest, open national conversation about firearms. We can focus on effective enforcement of existing laws, especially strengthening our background check system, and we can work together to enact commonsense improvements--like reinstating the assault weapons ban and closing the gun show loophole--so that guns do not fall into the hands of those irresponsible, law-breaking few. As if to signal that the Democratic Party is ready to follow Obama's lead on the issue, Senator Dianne Feinstein announced in her keynote speech to the convention's California delegation that she intends to reintroduce an "updated" version of the 1994-2004 "assault weapons" and "large" magazines. Elections have consequences - be sure to vote. [Source: NRA Institute for Legislative Affairs] |

California Rejects Lead-Ammo Ban
The California Fish and Game Commission rejected a proposal to expand the existing ban on the use of lead ammunition that applies to hunting in certain parts of California. The proposal would have expanded the existing ban on the use of lead ammunition, now applicable only in the limited "Condor Zone" created by AB 821, to also include State Wildlife Areas, Ecological Reserves, and depredation hunts. Ammunition ban proponents urged the Commissioners to put the proposed expansion out "to notice" for official public comment, a prerequisite step toward getting it formally adopted. Their arguments are based on recent publications created by researchers at UC Davis and UC Santa Cruz. National Rifle Association and California Rifle and Pistol Association representatives, scientists, and lawyers opposed the proposal. Specifically, two recent studies published by UC Davis researchers Terra R. Kelly and Christine K. Johnson purport to show that golden eagles and turkey vultures have significantly higher blood-lead levels during hunting season, in comparison to the off-season, and that lead exposure in both species declined significantly after the implementation of the AB 821 lead ammunition ban. But the UC Davis researchers' methodology behind their publications was so flawed that their conclusions are unreliable. |
