Editorial: The Clock Keeps Ticking
David A. Lombardo
If you're a gun owner living in Illinois you know three things: Statistically you have a better chance of being killed by violence in Chicago than Afghanistan; Illinois is the only state in the union where its citizens are not allowed to carry a firearm for personal protection; and there's no gun specific radio show to educate the millions of Chicagoans but that could change.
On Target now has the opportunity to put one up on Chicago's AM560 WIND conservative talk radio station. On Target Radio would cover Second Amendment news, concealed carry issues, product evaluations and have guests on for a live call-in discussion on a wide range of subjects. We'll also be checking in regularly with the Illinois State Rifle Association, the National Rifle Association, and shooting and hunting facilities.
WIND has been trying to put this together for a couple of years and we finally have an ideal spot immediately following my good friend Geoff Pinkus' Living Large show. It's the perfect demographic for On Target Radio and Geoff has agreed to promote it during his show to help get the audience to cross over to ours. Our account rep at WIND strongly believes this show will attract a significantly large audience and WIND will be promoting it throughout the week. We have secured the 9:00 p.m., Sunday evening time slot for the On Target Radio show and slated a start date of Sunday, August 26th but we need sponsors.
So far we've contacted about a hundred suburban gun stores, businesses and an array of other professionals. Most think it's a great idea; about 30 lawyers, politicians, firearms-related business owners, instructors and other want to be a guest; a number of folks are "considering it;" and the clock keeps ticking but we still don't have a commitment.
We are actively looking for sponsors to partner with our effort to bring the truth about firearms and the Second Amendment to the Chicago area. If you're interested we'd be happy to email you a sponsorship package. The clock keeps ticking. |
Romney Taps Gun Owner/Hunter
Ryan for V-P Choice
Firearms owners across the United States should be truly heartened by Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney's choice of Congressman Paul Ryan of Wisconsin as his vice presidential running mate. Politics aside, Ryan is an avid hunter and the former co-chairman of Congressional Sportsmen's Caucus which is the largest and most bi-partisan caucus in Congress. As a hunter, Rep. Ryan understands and appreciates the issues hunters and sportsmen care about, such as the current effort to ban the on-line and mail order sale of ammunition and President Obama's support for banning modern sporting rifles that are used for target shooting and increasingly by hunters to name just two. Many politicians pay lip service to "not wanting to infringe on the rights of hunters" often followed by a pronouncement or proposal that would do just that. With Paul Ryan, hunters and all law-abiding gun owners should be reassured that there is someone in Washington with demonstrated level-headedness on issues of great interest to them. When it comes to these recurring issues, there is no substitute for the knowledge and wisdom born of the personal experience and passion of a true hunter. ATF Advertises to Curb Flint Michigan
Crime Problem
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives has initiated an advertising campaign in Flint, Michigan in an attempt to encourage the public to report violent firearm related crimes. The message "Help Us Help You! - Report Gun Violence" will be displayed on several poster boards and buses that run throughout Flint beginning this week. The campaign will also provide the public with the ATF hotline number 1-800-ATF-GUNS that can be called 24/7. Information that leads to a successful prosecution may provide a reward of up to $10,000. The goal of the advertising campaign is to increase public awareness and involvement in the security of their communities. ATF wants the public to know information is needed and encouraged and tips may be reported anonymously. It is yet another program instituted by ATF and one wonders what the chances are that it will have any effect on the crime rate. For a closer look at the enigmatic ATF's other plans and programs grab a cup of coffee, get comfortable and read the ATF's Strategic Plan for FY 2010 - FY 2016. |
Illinois Riflemen Score Well At Camp Perry
Illinois' Gold Squad returned winners from the National High Power Rifle Championships held at Camp Perry, Ohio. This year's squad included Captain Konrad Powers, Coach John Holliger, Cliff Adams, Tim Klauer, Mike Eikey and Derek Dattner. Among their standout achievements were capturing of the Rumbold Trophy and the Soldier of Marathon Trophy. The Rumbold Trophy Match has competitors firing a total of 50 shots from various shooting positions at distances ranging from 200 to 600 yards. The Illinois Gold squad bested 48 other civilian teams with a score of 1955-58X. The squad also won in 2000. The Soldier of Marathon Trophy is awarded annually to the best-scoring 6-person civilian high power rifle squad competing in the National Trophy Rifle Team Match. The squad's score of 2905-85X was good enough to place third overall in the match just behind teams of active duty soldiers fielded by the U.S. Army and the U.S. Army Reserve. Coming in behind the Illinois Gold squad was a team fielded by the United States Marines. It was the sixth time an Illinois team has taken the Soldier of Marathon trophy home. |
