More Congressmen Voice UN

Arms Treaty Opposition

Twenty-six more members of Congress have signed on as co-sponsors to the Second Amendment Protection Act, the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms announced today.

"This is good news," Alan Gottlieb, the organization's chairman, said. "With a vote looming on the proposed United Nations Arms Trade Treaty, this sends a clear message to the Obama administration that the president will face real trouble if he or Secretary of State Hillary Clinton signs any document that threatens our constitutionally-protected individual right to keep and bear arms."

Sponsored by Illinois Republican Congressman Joe Walsh, H.R. 3594 was written with help from Gottlieb's staff, now has 60 co-sponsors, and has been referred to the House Committee on Foreign Affairs.

"The U.N. is scheduled to vote on the proposed treaty next week," Gottlieb said. "Right now they are pushing to include small arms and ammunition, and because the Devil is always in the details, when they finally hammer out a document that the Obama administration has already indicated it will sign, this could be extremely bad for American gun owners.

"Fortunately, Congressman Walsh had the foresight to understand this," he continued, "so he introduced this legislation to protect Second Amendment sovereignty. We want the United Nations gun grabbers, and the Obama administration to understand that they are treading in perilous waters if they adopt a treaty that even remotely threatens the firearms freedoms of our citizens.

"We are coming down to the wire on this treaty," Gottlieb stated. "Our constitutional rights far outweigh the administration's desire to push its 'citizen-of-the-world' philosophy down the throats of American gun owners. We want to see action on the Second Amendment Protection Act, and with 26 new co-sponsors, we are one step closer to achieving that goal." [Source: CCRKBA

Michigan Court Rules Against

Shooting Range Rights

The 1989 Michigan's Sport Shooting Range Act (SSRA) gave a statutory right to operate a shooting range without fear of nuisance lawsuits but a recent Michigan Court of Appeals ruling seeks to nullify the law. The Michigan United Conservation Clubs has filed an Amicus Curiae brief with the Michigan Supreme Court in Township of Addison v. Jerry Kline Barnhart supporting Jerry Barnhart's application for leave to appeal the Supreme Court from the ruling that denies the majority of shooting ranges across Michigan the protections granted under the SSRA (Public Act 269 of 1989). Earlier disputes between the two parties were thrown out in Oakland County's lower courts but the Michigan Court of Appeals inexplicably overruled these courts and turned the case into a broad mandate against shooting ranges. It declares that ranges being used for "business or commercial purposes" nullified SSRA protection. In fact, the act makes no mention of disallowing protections for any type of shooting range, whether public, private, nonprofit, or commercially run. Instead, the SSRA expressly includes ranges run by proprietorships, partnerships, and corporations - all of which are types of commercial business entities.

North Carolina Media Puts Gun Owners at Risk

WRAL.com, the online media outlet for the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill Triangle's WRAL television station, recently published an article about the number of Right-to-Carry permit holders in various counties of North Carolina implying law-abiding permit holders may not be safe and responsible. Not only did this article include a link to a biased anti-Right-to-Carry article run by the New York Times last year, it also included access to a searchable database of Right-to-Carry permit holders. The database does not appear, at first glance, to include actual names or addresses of permit holders but does narrow the search down to the actual street on which permit holders live. Also troubling are reports that WRAL's database has "accidentally" allowed some permit holders' addresses to appear. This article presents a sound argument for restricting access to information about and protecting the privacy of law-abiding permit holders. With the North Carolina General Assembly out of session, the NRA will seek introduction of legislation that would provide confidentiality for permit holders when the legislature reconvenes next year. CCRKBA Tells Bloomberg

He Should Go On Strike

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg's call for American police officers to "go on strike" in an effort to force Congress and state legislatures to push his gun prohibition agenda is "a new low in demagoguery," the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms said today. "Mayor Bloomberg has gone from bluster to blackmail with his extremist gun ban campaign," Chairman Alan Gottlieb, said. "He would have police officers quit their posts and abandon their public safety missions in what would amount to an exercise of national extortion. "Perhaps he believes it would be better," he noted, "for cops to walk off the job than to engage in illegal gun and drug transactions as some of his own New York City police have done lately. If Bloomberg is violating the law, it would not be a first for a member of Mayors Against Illegal Guns, the anti-gun organization he founded. At least 18 members of that group have been prosecuted for various crimes, which is not a track record I'd be proud of." [Source: Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms]

Shooting Industry Masters Raises $54,000 for Shooting Programs

Top firearms industry executives and professional competitors converged on Park City, Ky., last week to participate in the 10th Annual Shooting Industry Masters. "It was energizing to see 328 industry professionals enjoying two days of the shooting sports thrills that they help millions of others enjoy year round. Raising $54,000 for the shooting programs was icing on the cake. It was only possible through the generous efforts of our 34 sponsors, 82 teams, and numerous prize and equipment donors. We're incredibly proud to produce the event and be part of such a great industry," Randy Molde, Masters Chairman, said. This brings the amount raised by the Masters for First Shots to $141,000 in four years. Additionally, $7,000 was raised for USA Shooting. The Shooting Industry Masters is a handgun, rifle, shotgun competition divided into two classifications: Industry and Open. The Industry class is for new to intermediate shooters, while the Open class is for professional and advanced shooters. Regardless of class, scores are not published to maintain the no-pressure, fun atmosphere of the Masters.
