Magnum Research has introduced its newly re-engineered Magnum Lite MLR22 Win Mag rifle series in a semi-auto configuration. The series includes six models; 2 with an 18" stainless steel barrel, and 4 with the patented Magnum Lite exclusive 19" graphite barrel. The graphite rifle barrel utilizes uni-directional graphite fibers parallel to the bore axis, resulting in a barrel with 6 times the stiffness of the equivalent weight of steel. The lighter barrel is easier to handle and dissipates heat up to 43% faster than steel. The result is rimfire performance with extreme accuracy.

072012a

It has strength comparable to the company's Premium Series cases but is one third lighter. "The Ultra-Lite project has been in development for a many months. Time was taken to assure that these cases were engineered to be the extremely strong but also one of the lightest aluminum gun cases on the market today. Plus we needed to ensure the quality standards that we are known for were achieved," said Bill Kinsala, President at Americase. Editorial: Chicago Aldermen Toss

Misdemeanor Restriction

David A. Lombardo

Once again there's dancing in Chicago's city hall as the aldermen do the 2A Two-Step. The latest bitter pill that Rahm and the Feckless Fifty must swallow is the result of last month's ruling in Shawn Gowder v. City of Chicago.

District Judge Samuel Der-Yeghiayan ruled in favor of a Chicago man who challenged a section of the city's gun law after he was denied a permit because of a misdemeanor conviction. In a 30-page ruling, Der-Yeghiayan said the Chicago Firearm Ordinance is "...unconstitutionally void for vagueness" and "...violates Gowder's right to keep and bear arms under the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution."

Gowder's federal lawsuit challenged that portion of the Chicago ordinance which prevented him from obtaining a Chicago firearm permit. It stated any who has ever been convicted "in any jurisdiction" of an "unlawful use of a weapon that is a firearm" is ineligible to possess one in Chicago. Gowder had a 1995 Illinois conviction for unlawful use of a weapon but he was never accused of discharging the firearm, only possessing one; it was a felony at the time. The law was challenged and a federal court downgraded Gowder's conviction to a misdemeanor. Gowder holds a valid Illinois Firearm Owner's Identification card but the City of Chicago denied issuing him a firearm permit based on his 1995 misdemeanor conviction.

So now, once again, the City Fathers are dancing to the tune of yet another Second Amendment friendly court decision. The new version of the Chicago ordinance will permanently bar anyone who has been convicted of a felony violent crime and impose a five-year ban on anyone convicted of a misdemeanor violent crime rather than bar the person from firearm ownership for life. While all dances eventually come to an end, at least for the moment I derive great pleasure from watching the City Fathers being taken to the woodshed for a change.

Sierra Club Seeks Elk Hunt End

The radical Sierra Club has asked that the Grand Teton National Park complete yet another environmental review of its annual elk hunt. The group cites "changing conditions" since the park last completed a study in 2007 as the reason they want hundreds or thousands of taxpayer dollars again spent on the review. The request was delivered as a letter to GTNP park officials and claims that the annual elk hunts habituate grizzly bears to eating gut piles and puts park visitors at risk. A pair of photographers urged the Sierra Club to send the letter. Grand Teton Superintendent Mary Gibson Scott reportedly responded to the Sierra Club's request letter that their concerns about elk hunts had already been reviewed and that no additional steps would be taken. The 61-year-old annual elk hunt was created by Congressional legislation as an elk reduction program under which federal, state and park wildlife managers may authorize the hunting of elk in Grand Teton to reduce the park's elk population to a goal of 1,600. Wounded Warrior Makes Mark as

Paralympic Shooter

A testament to the indomitable spirit of the American warrior is highlighted by the story of Sgt. 1st Class John Olson who lost a leg in combat while on patrol in Iraq nine years ago. After years of physical therapy and the long, hard road to coping with the loss of a limb, Olson is back072012c

on top of his game and showing the world why the American warrior is second to none. Olson has traded his Infantry squad leader role for that of a Paralympic shooter. A member of the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit, Olson will participate in the 2012 Paralympic Games opening ceremonies Aug. 29 in London and will officially become the first combat-injured active-duty service member to ever take part in the event. Through competitions and World Cups, Olson did well enough to secure a spot for the U.S. in rifle competition. In turn, the U.S. Selection Committee picked Olson to compete in two rifle event at the Games: Mixed 50m Prone Rifle and Mixed 10m Air Rifle. Ten Ways to Prevent Wildfires

While Target Shooting

The July 19th issue of the Action Target Journal noted that over 20 wildfires have been started by target shooting this year in Utah alone with dozens more started in Idaho, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, and Washington. Many of those fires could have been prevented or stopped had the shooters been prepared. The article offers a list of 10 things shooters can do to prevent wildfires while target shooting including bring a shovel and an old blanket. The article suggests using a shovel to dig a trench around your targets before shooting to ensure that any fire caused by sparks can be easily contained. Place the blanket near the targets you'll be shooting so it's easily available if needed. A blanket is one of the best ways to smother a fire and can be even more effective than water. Other suggestions include: Bring a bucket of water; Shoot on quality steel targets; Place your targets on dirt or gravel; Don't shoot trash; Don't shoot with steel core ammunition; Bring a shovel and an old blanket; Never shoot exploding targets; Don't use incendiary or tracer ammo; Don't smoke; and Park your vehicle away from dry grass.

Browning Celebrates 1,000,000 Facebook "Likes"

Browning's Facebook page has hit a major milestone in the shooting industry - it has passed one million "likes." This week Browning crossed into new territory inhabited mostly by celebrities and world-wide brands you find in grocery stores. Browning is the first of a group of similar firearms and outdoor-related companies to break the 1-million barrier. When asked how Browning did it, Browning President and CEO, Travis hall, said: "Our whole company got behind our page sharing it with friends and family. This provided the initial growth in 2008. Our strategy was and remains simple: to provide good service to our fans and give them a place to gather and share, and to get answers from us. But we really owe the greatest part of our success to the legacy of John Moses Browning himself. He truly was the greatest gun designer the world has ever known and we continue to honor that legacy with the guns and gear we make. All 1-million of us - including me - are proud to be a part of that legacy."
