NRA dispels IRS gun seizure myth
Reports have been circulating regarding S. 1813--a highway bill recently passed by the U.S. Senate. The story goes that this bill would allow the IRS to seize your passport and your guns if you owe more than $50,000 in back taxes. The claims are totally bogus. Although the bill is certainly long and complex, those who suggest that the bill is anti-gun are totally misreading it.
The only firearms-related language in this bill is part of a lengthy provision on hazardous material transportation. The language (see bottom of page 1320) makes clear that the personal transportation of firearms and ammunition isn't regulated or prohibited by the federal hazardous material transportation laws, and commercial transportation isn't prohibited by those laws. This is a pro-gun, rather than anti-gun, provision.
Some reports claim the bill would allow the government to revoke gun permits. However, the "permits" referred to (on page 1323 of the bill) are "special permits" related to hazardous material transportation, and have nothing to do with firearms. This section of the bill begins on page 1314 of the bill, which provides citations to the relevant sections of Title 49, U.S. Code, none of which relates to firearms.
All of this is also completely unrelated to the bill's provisions on revocation of passports for people with unpaid taxes. Those provisions appear in a separate part of the bill. Contrary to some reports, the revocation of an individual's passport does not prohibit the person from possessing firearms. [Source: National Rifle Association] |

Issa issues update on Fast & Furious
House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform Chairman Darrell Issa has released a memorandum to the committee outlining his case for issuing a Contempt of Congress citation against Attorney General Eric Holder. The congressional investigation into Operation Fast and Furious has yielded significant results. It forced the Department of Justice to withdraw its false denial of whistleblower allegations. Dennis Burke, the U.S. Attorney for Arizona who headed the office that led Operation Fast and Furious, was forced to resign. Attorney General Eric Holder now admits the operation was "fundamentally flawed" and that guns from the operation will continue to show up at crime scenes in Mexico and the United States "for years to come." Attorney General Holder has also committed to ensuring that such an operation will never happen again. Nevertheless, Operation Fast and Furious' outrageous tactics, the Justice Department's refusal to fully cooperate with the investigation, and efforts to smear and retaliate against whistleblowers have tainted the institutional integrity of the Justice Department. Only 567 of the nearly 2,000 weapons from the operation have been recovered and, as the Attorney General admits, the effects from Fast and Furious are far from over.

U.N. arms treaty not a slam dunk
The International Association for the Protection of Civilian Arms Rights (IAPCAR) added the National Arms Association of Spain (ANARMA) as a new member of the international gun rights association working to protect and expand the right to keep and bear arms around the globe. ANARMA joins 19 other groups from 10 countries on five different continents that represent millions of firearm owners and citizens concerned about civilian arms rights. "Our international coalition is growing by the day with groups like ANARMA as new allies in securing the universal right to keep and bear arms," said IAPCAR executive director, Philip Watson. "I think the positive dialogue on civilian arms rights is only going to grow as we've recently added the Austrian group SPSC and now ANARMA of Spain as new members." Julianne Versnel, director of operations for the Second Amendment Foundation and Alan Gottlieb, Chairman of the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms established IAPCAR to serve as a vehicle to unify arms rights groups against international threats to the human right of self-defense and the legitimate use of guns. |
Ohio Gun Rights Group Responds to Attack on Shooting Fundraiser
Several Democrats have joined with a gun control group to publicly attack Ohio State Representative Margy Conditt because of a fundraising event she has scheduled for May 12 at the Middletown Sportsmen's Club where participants will have the opportunity to shoot skeet. The group linked her fundraiser to a recent Ohio shooting where three students died and called her fundraiser "absurd" and "highly inappropriate." In response to these attacks, Buckeye Firearms Association announced that they are announcing the fundraiser to their hundreds of thousands of supporters in Ohio and are pledging to match any donations made to this event, up to a total of $1,000.00. "This attack on State Representative Conditt is ridiculous," said Jim Irvine, Chairman of Buckeye Firearms Association. "We realize that a handful of politicians don't like guns. But to link this innocent fundraiser to a tragic mass murder is shameful and Representative Conditt deserves an apology." |

Ex Guns & Ammo editor Venola
charged with murder
Richard Erick Venola (53) of Golden Valley, Ariz. was arrested on Wednesday on a murder charge. Venola, who was the 12th editor of Guns & Ammo magazine but left the company two years ago, was arrested by Mohave County Sheriff's deputies after a neighbor reported that Venola had shot a visitor. The victim, 39 year old James O'Neill, suffered a gunshot wound to the chest from an unspecified high power rifle and was declared dead on the scene. Detectives executed a search warrant, recovered the rifle and collected other evidence. It was reported in the news that Venola and O'Neill had been friends and appeared to have been drinking prior to the shooting. Authorities haven't said what they believe led to the shooting. Venola, who declined to talk to detectives until he had an attorney present, was booked into the Mohave County Jail in Kingman on suspicion of second-degree murder. He is being held on $100,000 bond. The case remains under investigation and autopsy results are pending. |
