TSA screeners arrested for drug
trafficking and corruption
Just when you think the Federal government can't get worse the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) reports that two former and two current Transportation Security Administration (TSA) screeners at Los Angeles International Airport have been arrested. The arrests were based upon federal narcotics trafficking and bribery charges for allegedly taking cash payments to allow large shipments of cocaine, methamphetamine and marijuana to pass through the X-ray machines at TSA security checkpoints. The DEA also reports a drug courier has been arrested and as of this writing they expected a second to surrender.
Naral Richardson (30) and John Whitfield (23), both of Los Angeles and currently TSA screeners, have been charged with taking bribes to look the other way as suitcases full of drugs passed through the screening process. Also arrested were Joy White (27) of Compton, who had been terminated last year for allowing over 20 kilograms of cocaine to pass through her security checkpoint, and Capeline McKinney (25) of Los Angeles who also allegedly allowed more than 20 kilograms of cocaine to pass through her security checkpoint. Duane Eleby (28), of Downey, was expected to surrender by the time of this writing. Eleby is alleged to have personally attempted to bring almost five kilograms of cocaine through a security checkpoint but his narcotics were seized by law enforcement when he went through the wrong security checkpoint. Terry Cunningham (28), of Los Angeles, an alleged drug courier, is currently being sought by authorities and Stephen Bayliss (28), of Los Angeles, an alleged drug courier, has been arrested.
The indictment outlines five separate incidents in which TSA officials conspired with either drug couriers or an undercover operative working with the DEA to smuggle narcotics through security checkpoints at LAX. The incidents occurred from early February 2011 and continued until early July 2011. (Source: Drug Enforcement Agency)

Judge knocks down N.C.
emergency powers gun ban
A federal district court judge in North Carolina has struck down that state's emergency power to impose a ban on firearms and ammunition outside the home during a declared emergency, ruling that the provision violates the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms. The case, Bateman v. Purdue, was brought by the Second Amendment Foundation, Grass Roots North Carolina FFE and three individual plaintiffs. Defendants in the case were Gov. Beverly Purdue and Reuben F. Young, secretary of the state's Department of Crime Control and Public Safety, in their official capacities. In his opinion, Judge Malcolm J. Howard, senior United States district judge for the Eastern District of North Carolina, wrote, "...the court finds that the statutes at issue here are subject to strict scrutiny...While the bans imposed pursuant to these statutes may be limited in duration, it cannot be overlooked that the statutes strip peaceable, law abiding citizens of the right to arm themselves in defense of hearth and home, striking at the very core of the Second Amendment." SAF sues New Mexico over CCW permits
The Second Amendment Foundation has filed a lawsuit in federal district court in New Mexico challenging that state's prohibition on the issuance of concealed carry permits to legal resident aliens. SAF filed the complaint in U.S. District Court for the District of New Mexico on behalf of John W. Jackson, an Australian citizen who came to the United States with his wife, an American citizen, in 2007. He obtained permanent resident status in November 2008. They are represented by Albuquerque attorney Paul M. Kienzle, III and Glen Ellyn, Illinois attorney David Sigale. Named as defendants in the case, in their official capacities, are New Mexico Attorney General Gary King and Bill Hubbard, director of the Special Investigations of the New Mexico Department of Public Safety. "Legal resident aliens in the United States should have the same personal protection rights as anyone," noted SAF founder and executive vice president Alan Gottlieb, "because criminals do not play favorites. Mr. Jackson is a productive member of his community and his plight is shared by many legal alien residents. We just won a similar lawsuit in Massachusetts and we will pursue this case with equal vigor." |
House appropriates $12M for NICS upgrades
The U.S. House of Representatives Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science has appropriated $12 million to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) Improvement Amendments Act grant program. Mayors Against Illegal Guns Co-Chair New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said, "Today's appropriation of $12 million to strengthen reporting to the NICS is a testament to the bipartisan efforts of Republican Chairman Frank Wolf and Ranking Member Chaka Fattah. This is the kind of bipartisan leadership that our coalition stands for and that is so urgently needed to reduce the gun-related crimes that kill 34 people in our country every day. The appropriation follows on the heels of Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell's letter on the fifth anniversary of the Virginia Tech School shooting urging other governors to improve the reporting of mental health records to the gun background check system. The letter has also been signed by more than 30,000 others urging their governors to strengthen reporting to NICS. [SOURCE: Mayors Against Illegal Guns] |

Sen. Tester & Rep Miller named NSSF 2011 Legislators of the Year
The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) honored Sen. Jon Tester (D-Mont.) and Rep. Jeff Miller (R-Fla.) as NSSF's 2011 Legislators of the Year at an NSSF Political Action Committee (PAC) reception held recently in Washington, D.C. In presenting the awards, NSSF senior vice president and general counsel Lawrence Keane praised the leadership qualities of the two lawmakers. Last year, Sen. Tester and Rep. Miller, who are co-chairs of the Congressional Sportsmen's Caucus in their respective chambers, introduced the Hunting, Fishing and Recreational Shooting Protection Act (S. 838/H.R. 1558) in order to protect the right of hunters and sportsmen to use the ammunition of their choice. Anti-hunting organizations, as well as extreme environmental groups, continue to push for the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to ban traditional ammunition made with lead components. These groups falsely claim a ban is needed to protect wildlife populations, despite incontrovertible evidence wildlife populations are thriving, and to protect hunters, even though the science is clear using traditional ammunition poses no human health risk to hunters.
