It comes with two 30-round Colt magazines, a Matech rear back-up iron sight for acquiring distances out to 600 meters, a Knights Armament Rail System with three, six, nine and 12 o'clock positions, and an ambidextrous fire control selector.

Apex Tactical Specialties is offering an Action Enhancement Kit (AEK) trigger for the Smith & Wesson M&P pistol designed to work as a stand-alone drop in part or with either Apex's Duty Carry or Competition Action Enhancement Kits. The AEK Trigger, which delivers improved trigger control with reduction in both pre-travel and over-travel, is machined from a solid piece of aluminum billet and hard coat anodized for durability. Editorial: The right to bear arms

David A. Lombardo

At no time in recent history has the demand for the right to bear arms for personal protection been greater. In the Chicago metropolitan area not a day goes by that the newspapers don't report ever-increasing murder and mayhem.

Unseasonably warm weather this past week brought out the crazies resulting in an astonishing orgy of violence leaving nine people dead and over 40 wounded. Most of it was on the city's south side but overall it covered a territory ranging from West Rogers Park to Humboldt Park. One of the dead was a six year old girl as a result of gang violence in the Little Village neighborhood. The suspects included two boys, 18 and 16, both Latin Kings and the latter of who was already the target of a warrant.

To say law abiding citizens want to be able to protect themselves would be a dramatic understatement and they aren't limited to red meat eating conservatives clutching their guns and bibles either. Recently several known liberal print commentators went on record saying they still don't like guns but it's probably time for concealed carry in Illinois. One pointed out in a Chicago Tribune piece that with 49 states having weighed in, the anti-gun "blood will run in the streets" mantra has simply proven to be false.

Others have weighed in a bit more specifically such as Illinois' Pike County. In the election earlier this week the voters of Pike County approved a firearms concealed-carry ordinance by a 3,214 to 550 margin in what's been cited as the largest voter turnout in Pike County history. In reality it's all growl and no teeth since the ordinance is in direct opposition to Illinois law which takes precedence but it is a point the legislature should note well. Historians have stated that it's the first time since 1862 that county voters in any U.S. state have explicitly reversed a state law. The previous example was when the five western counties of Virginia seceded to form the new state of West Virginia. Word has it that other counties around Illinois are considering following Pike County's lead.

All the outrage and demand for concealed carry brings us to the shooting of Sanford, Florida's Trayvon Martin by George Zimmerman. Martin, an African-American 17 year old, who was walking home through a gated community armed only with a bag of Skittles candy and a can of iced tea, was confronted by the 28 year old Zimmerman. The latter held the full weight and authority of captain of the neighborhood watch group bolstered by Florida's Stand Your Ground law. From what I've read Zimmerman's 911 call included racial epithets and capped a series of 46 emergency calls he'd made over the previous six years. Depending upon who's speaking Zimmerman is a saint or the devil; at this point no one appears to have said anything about Martin other than he was a good kid walking home with a bag of candy and iced tea.

How this plays out remains to be seen but my observation, based on having had hundreds of students take concealed carry and home protection classes from me, is there's a heck of a lot of demand for the right to bear arms bolstered by an equally huge amount of misinformation and over-confidence in one's ability and understanding of the law. There are, in my opinion, two simple truths to the concealed carry issue.

First, all law abiding citizens should have the legal right to carry a firearm for personal protection but some law abiding citizens should think twice about actually carrying one.

Second, with rights come responsibilities and one major responsibility is getting the proper education on what the law says and how to use a firearm properly. While I don't like the idea of a government body setting those requirements, I strongly believe the industry should regulate and police itself to assure those who carry the power to take a life know what they're doing.

Ruger suspends acceptance of new orders

Sturm, Ruger & Company announced today that for the first quarter 2012, they received orders for more than one million units and has now temporarily suspended the acceptance of new orders. "The Retailer Programs that we offered from January 1st through February 29th were very successful and generated significant orders from retailers to independent wholesale distributors," Michael Fifer, CEO, said. "Despite our continuing successful efforts to increase production rates, the incoming order rate exceeds our capacity to rapidly fulfill these orders. Consequently, we are temporarily suspended the acceptance of new orders." Fifer said he anticipates they will resume the normal acceptance of orders by the end of May. Sturm Ruger will announce its results and file its Quarterly Report on Form 10-Q for the first quarter of 2012 on Tuesday, May 1, 2012, after the close of the stock market.

Kimber opposes New York microstamping legislation

Yonkers, NY-based Kimber Manufacturing has announced strong opposition to both the proposed microstamping legislation and its inclusion in the budget under consideration by the New York State General Assembly. Microstamping purportedly allows a manufacturer to laser-engrave a firearm's make, model and serial number on the firing pin and/or breech face of each firearm. These markings are then thought to be transferred to each shell casing when fired. Independent studies have been unable to substantiate its efficacy and shown the technology to be flawed. "Kimber supports further testing and evaluation of both the technology and its efficacy regarding the reduction of the criminal misuse of firearms" says Kimber COO Ralph E. Karanian. "Absent definitive findings on both issues, microstamping legislation yields little more than a false sense of achievement for our elected officials; likely costs New York good manufacturing jobs and tax revenues, and distracts from the pursuit of truly effective solutions. In the event microstamping becomes law, it would increase manufacturing costs here in New York and force Kimber to reconsider its current expansion which will add approximately 150 professional and skilled jobs in 2012."

SIG Sauer is expanding

Sig Sauer announced plans to expand the company's domestic production capabilities through the acquisition of a new facility at the Pease International Tradeport in Newington, N.H. As part of the firearms manufacturer's strategic global expansion plan, the new campus will be home to the company's corporate and manufacturing areas. The state-of-the-art property will provide Sig Sauer with three times the usable work space of its current Exeter, N.H., headquarters. "This campus will bring the majority of Sig Sauer's employees and manufacturing under the same roof," said Ron Cohen, president and CEO. "This will allow us to maximize our production capabilities as well as improve efficiency in manufacturing." Originally acquired in 1990, the Exeter facility has undergone a series of updates and enhancements to improve manufacturing processes. "Our current headquarters has reached its maximum manufacturing capability. Demand for Sig Sauer products has grown to the point where expansion is a must," Cohen said. The transition to the Newington site is expected to take 12 to 18 months and be completed by mid-2013. The new site offers double the company's current square footage and includes a 700-stall parking lot.

Brownell's/NRA youth award

The NRA is accepting applications for the Brownell's/NRA Outstanding Achievement Youth Award. Chosen for their accomplishments in the community, the classroom and the shooting sports, three exceptional young people from across the United States will receive a total of $10,000 courtesy of Brownell's. "The Outstanding Achievement Youth Award recognizes young people who exemplify excellence in not only the shooting sports, but other areas of their lives," said Larry Quandahl, Manager of NRA's Youth Programs Department. "Dedication to academics and community are important facets to becoming a well-rounded shooter." Shooting sport enthusiasts under the age of 21 who meet the core requirements are eligible for the award. Those requirements include completion of a NRA Basic Firearm Training Course, earning a rating through the Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification Program, submitting three letters of recommendation, providing a copy of their school transcript and writing a 1,000 word essay entitled, "What the Shooting Sports have Taught Me." Applications for the 2012 Brownell's/NRA Outstanding Achievement Youth Award must arrive at NRA Headquarters no later than May 1st.
