Canada to end long gun registry

It is difficult to imagine that U.S. shooters would look to our cousins to the north for encouragement relating to gun control but so be it. It appears that Canada will end the requirement that its citizens must register their long guns. The proposed legislation also eases up on rules regarding the sale and transfer of firearms by individuals. It stops short of eliminating the requirement for individual citizen's having a gun license and the registration of handguns.

The laws had been enacted by the liberal Jean Chretien government in 1995 partly in response to a 1989 shooting spree in Montreal. In that instance a crazed gunman with a rifle killed 14 women. The legislation was wildly unpopular among most Canadian citizens many of whom live in rural areas dependent upon firearms for tourism, sustenance hunting and safety. However Canada, not unlike the U.S., finds itself ruled by a handful of population centers whose citizens view a comfortable pair of loafers far more essential than snowshoes.

Public Safety Minister Vic Toews told reporters that the government's actions are long overdue. "It does nothing to help put an end to gun crimes, nor has it saved one Canadian life," he said. "It criminalizes hard-working and law-abiding citizens such as farmers and sport shooters, and it has been a billion-dollar boondoggle left to us by the previous Liberal government."

Liberal Senate leader James Cowan said while the Senate's liberals have no intention of filibustering the bill, they will "make sure it gets the serious consideration it needs." Cowan said the Tories have taken five months to move Bill C-19, the Ending the Long Gun Registry Act, through the House, taking their time with an issue that pleases their base and is a good fundraising tool. "We're not going to rubber stamp anything," he said. "But certainly it won't be in the Senate longer than in House."

Cowan said he expects Bill C-19 to arrive at the committee on legal and constitutional affairs sometime in March at which time the committee will hear testimony that could continue for weeks.

"We want to make sure all sides are heard," he said. "We are determined to use the powers we have to assure the committee has a full hearing." The Harper Conservatives now have a commanding majority in the Senate, so while Liberal senators may succeed in slowing down the passage of C-19, it will ultimately pass.

National bill advances sportsmen interests

New legislation in Congress, to be put on a fast track in the U.S. House of Representatives, tackles some of the worst restrictions on our sporting heritage. The newly introduced H.R. 4089, strongly supported by the U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance, is a package of four high-priority bills to protect and enhance hunting, fishing, and recreational shooting, especially on public lands. Title II of the legislation protects recreational shooting on BLM National Monument lands reversing recent unwarranted restrictions on this traditional activity. Growing restrictions on recreational shooting on public lands have become a major problem and this provision will fix that problem on BLM Monument lands. "USSA greatly appreciates the bi-partisan work by the House Natural Resources Committee and Chairman Doc Hastings (R-WA) to forge this important new hunting/fishing/shooting bill and put it on the fast track.  Let us hope that the U.S. Senate and the Obama Administration are ready to do their part in enacting promptly this vital bill," said Bill Horn, USSA Director of Federal Affairs (and former Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Department of the Interior). As H.R. 4089 begins to move in Congress, sportsmen everywhere need to voice their strong support to their Representatives.

Iowa Dems walk out on pro-gun debate

The Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms (CCRKBA) has condemned Democrat members of the Iowa House of Representatives for leaving the capitol rather than debate , and possibly vote on, two pro-gun measures affirming the right to keep and bear arms, and the right of self-defense. House Joint Resolution 2009 proposes an amendment to the state constitution that includes a specific right to keep and bear arms. House Bill 2215 is a "stand-your-ground" measure that would expand the use of reasonable force to include lethal force, to resist grave bodily harm or death. "Once again," said CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb, "Democrats have painted themselves as the party of gun control by disappearing rather than debating measures to strengthen the firearm civil rights of Iowa citizens. We are disappointed that once again Democrats choose to be disingenuous about ducking out on gun owners. It is a sad example of legislative cowardice, since both bills will likely pass the Republican-controlled House. It is telling that Iowa Democratic Party Chairwoman Sue Dvorsky referred to both of these measures as 'dangerous bills."

ISRA to march on state capitol

The Illinois Rifle Association is urging all Illinois citizens to join the organization's members for the 2012 Illinois Gun Owners Lobby Day in Springfield. This year's IGOLD event is set for Wednesday, March 7th and features a special guest speaker: Dr. Suzanna Hupp - a former Republican member of the Texas House of Representatives and a recognized public advocate for the Second Amendment. IGOLD is an annual event where everyone goes to lobby their representatives in the Illinois House and Senate. Those interested in participating should meet at the Prairie Capital Convention Center; the doors will open at 10:45 with the program set to begin at 11:30 am. Participants will be given a legislative briefing then participate in an organized march to the Capitol Building where they will have an opportunity to locate and talk with their individual representatives. A spokesman for the ISRA pointed out there are several parking garages located near the Convention Center with metered on-street parking is available in the area. Attendees should be aware there are metal detectors in the Capitol building so plan accordingly by leaving knives, novelty ammo keyfobs, etc. home and bring proper identification.

ATF nabs California gun traffickers

The ATF announced Dennis William Estes and Kevin John Webber have been arrested in Stockton, California after conspiring to manufacture and sell firearms without a license. Estes (37), a resident of Modesto, has been charged with six counts of dealing firearms without a license, six counts of being a felon being in possession of a firearm, two counts of possessing a machine gun and silencer, and conspiracy to commit a federal crime. Webber 35, resident of Lathrop has been charged with one count of aiding and abetting the dealing of firearms without a license and conspiracy to commit a federal crime. From November 2011 to February 2012 ATF conducted a proactive firearms trafficking investigation and made undercover purchases of numerous firearms from Estes including two suspected Machine Guns, AR 15 Type Weapons, AK-74 Rifle, silencer, as well as other long guns and hand guns, and approximately 450 rounds of .223 ammunition. Webber aided and abetted the dealing of firearms without a license. Estes attempted to purchase an M-60 Machine Gun on Friday during the pre-arranged undercover meet with ATF undercover agents just prior to his arrest. After Estes was taken into custody ATF seized eight additional firearms, and alleged controlled substances.
