Texas Man Sentenced to Prison for Straw Purchase
Lying to buy almost two dozen firearms destined for Mexico has netted a Pharr, Texas, man a prison term, United States Attorney Kenneth Magidson announced. Jesus Rodriguez (26), of Pharr, was sentenced today by Chief United States District Judge Ricardo Hinojosa to 40 months imprisonment to be followed by a two-year-term of supervised release. Rodriguez was convicted after pleading guilty on April 12, 2011, of lying on the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) Form 4473 when he acquired 20 firearms. ATF agents initiated an investigation upon receiving information that Rodriguez appeared to be "straw" purchasing a firearm in November 2008. ATF agents subsequently learned that Rodriquez had purchased additional firearms and interviewed Rodriguez who admitted he had lied on the ATF forms when he purchased the firearms and stated the firearms were for him. Rodriguez admitted to forcing his wife to purchase firearms and stated he knew the firearms were destined for Mexico. Rodriguez purchased a total of 20 firearms over a seven-month period beginning November 2008. In handing down today's sentence, Judge Hinojosa considered all of the firearms unlawfully purchased by Rodriguez. |

House Passes Legislation to Make Federal Duck Stamps Easier to Obtain
A recent U.S. House of Representatives vote could mean permanent easy access for hunters looking to buy their federal duck stamps online. The e-Duck Stamp program, started four years ago on a trial basis, allows hunters 16 and older to purchase temporary duck stamps online until their physical stamps arrive in the mail. Previously waterfowl hunters were required to buy federal migratory bird hunting and conservation stamps, or duck stamps, at post offices and sporting goods stores. The trouble came when suppliers ran out of stamps early in the season or small rural post offices didn't carry the stamps at all. Now that the House has responded positively to this push for the program, with a 373-1 vote, DU is asking the Senate to do the same. If the Senate vote is successful, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service would have the authority to make the program permanent and extend it to all states. |

Correction
In last week's article on Illinois HB1294 and HB1599 it was omitted that individuals who own semi-automatic firearms prior to the inception of the law would be given 90 days to show proof of ownership to the Illinois State Police. It further says, "On or after the effective date
such person may transfer such device only to an heir, an individual residing in another state maintaining that device in another state, or a dealer licensed as a federal firearms dealer." |
