Difference Between Shiatsu & Swedish

Through the many years of my practice, I have been asked countless times, "What is the difference between shiatsu and traditional massage?" First of all, there are a lot of similarities between the two. Both systems are wonderful ways of relieving stress and promoting health. Both systems focus on the individual body of the person being treated.
Western massage is based on the idea that muscle tension and improper alignment may cause or worsen physical, mental or internal imbalances. Massage techniques attempt to reduce tension within the body to facilitate the free flow of blood and energy. This in turn makes the major systems of the body (immune, circulatory, nervous, etc.) naturally heal disease and promote well-being.
In Shiatsu, there are 838 basic shiatsu pressure points, located on the muscles, nerves, blood vessels, lymph vessels, bones and endocrine glands. Depending on the condition of the body, the therapist applies appropriate amounts of pressure. The tighter the muscles are, the lighter the pressure. As the muscles relax, the pressure becomes deeper but is always firm and steady.
The magic of shiatsu lies in the control of the pressure points. Shiatsu regulates the nervous system and promotes natural healing by stimulating chemical responses in the body. Despite their differences, the aim of both systems is the same: a balanced, healthy and happy individual.

Feeling Worse After a Treatment
Why do I sometimes feel worse after a treatment? This is a question I get asked on occasion. While most people feel better after a craniosacral treatment, there are a few times that the symptoms seem to feel worse. There are many reasons for this type of post-treatment discomfort. One is that the body is re-experiencing a previous trauma or injury as it is releasing from the tissues. Sometimes this can take a few hours or a few days. Another reason is that the area is coming back to "life" after not having much feeling and the area is more sensitive. Often, the body had adapted to a malfunction. When we remove the adaptation and we get closer to the cause of the problem, the suppressed pain comes back to the surface. Also, the pain may stay to some extent so that the patient will continue to come until the whole problem is resolved.
In my experience, if people report feeling worse after a treatment, and we dissect the feelings, I usually find that there was some difference in the pain from before the treatment. Maybe it was the intensity of a headache, or the duration. Or the pain felt a little bit different. I have also found that feeling worse often happens only one time and subsequent treatments are an improvement in the problem.

What is CAMTC?

CAMTC stands for California Massage Therapy Council. Their mission is to protect the public by certifying qualified massage professionals in California. CAMTC is required to:
(1) Create and implement voluntary certification for the massage therapy profession that will enable consumers to easily identify credible Certified Massage Therapists (CMTs) and Certified Massage Practitioners (CMPs);
(2) Ensure that CMTs and CMPs have completed sufficient training at approved schools; and
(3) Increase education and training standards consistent with other states.
CMPs and CMTs also must undergo background checks, including fingerprinting and other identification verification procedures. Click here: To find out the difference between CMP and CMT
Best way to find out if your massage therapist is a CMP or CMT is
ask to see their CMT or CMP certificate or ID card, which will typically be posted at their place of business. You can also use the "search mode" on the CAMTC website to check by name, city or certificate number.
Take note: city is where they live not work. So I would search either by name or certification #.
You can view my certifications on my personal website www.MichelleDorshkind.com

Hypertension & Acupuncture
Essential Hypertension is the most common form of high-blood pressure in the United States with over 90 percent of the reported cases for "high blood-pressure". When hypertension is termed 'essential', it means that there is no known cause for the high-blood pressure in the body. In the absence of kidney malfunction or heart muscle disease, the primary cause of hypertension is 'unknown'.
As you may expect, with Chinese Medicine we look upon this situation a bit differently. Essential Hypertension is usually a condition of imbalance between the Sympathetic Nerve Systems (yang) and the Parasympathetic Nerve System (yin) which in turn affects the overall Blood Vessel Systems and Organ Systems.
When we are in stressful situations, our bodies need to have the blood supply diverted to the muscles so that we can act immediately. We are still genetically "wired" to run away from the tiger about to pounce upon us from the bushes. When the muscles have blood then they can act. The sympathetic nerve system accomplished this change of blood flow by tightening the blood vessels and organs and forcing our blood into the muscles. When the threat is gone then our Parasympathetic Nerve system relaxes the blood vessels and directs that blood flow back to our organs for digestion and detoxification of the body. This system has worked wonderfully until the modern age.
In our constantly stressful day-to-day lifestyle, this elegant system of balance is forced out of balance. Stressful situations from our work, home, finances, family, et cetera,. continue to act upon our bodies much like the tiger about to pounce. This creates a constant level of tension in our organ systems and nerve systems. This is what is meant when we say someone has "Liver Qi Stagnation". Over time this imbalance becomes our new "normal" and our blood-pressure begins to rise. Our internal organs become tight and hardened due to the lack of blood flowing smoothly through them. In-turn this creates heat, toxins, impurities and inflammation in the body. These will destroy tissue health, reduces immunity, weakens our bones and tightens our muscles.
When our Organ Systems tighten, our heart muscle and arteries attempt to compensate for this resistance and they in turn 'raise our blood pressure" by beating harder and tightening the arteries. This type of hypertension starts out as very variable and can change from day to day, or in some cases, hour to hour. Over time this condition of increased blood-pressure becomes the new normal and we have 'essential hypertension' on a consistent basis.
The rule of thumb is that if there is hypertension in the body then there must be congestion in the organs. The danger of this continual pattern is that our organs no longer digest our food which in turn creates imbalances in our nutrition. Our muscles become tight and painful. Our sleep patterns are disrupted which prevents our physical 'repair' function which occur only during the deep sleep at night. All in all, our energy levels drop which affects our ability to fight off disease and illness. We end up weaker, sicker, tired, and depressed.
Acupuncture can help the body recover from this situation by rebalancing the Nerve, Organ, Muscle and Vascular systems. By rebalancing these systems the hypertension can be lowered and, overtime, maintained in healthier ways. By releasing the trapped energies in the organs and muscles and relaxing the taunt nerve systems, acupuncture can promote healing, wellness, physical and emotional balance, as well as breaking the vicious cycle of 'essential hypertension'. Herb of the Month
The Chinese have been using ginger both as a spice and as a medicinal for many centuries. Traditionally, we use Ginger in herbal formulation as a warm and spicy herb that helps reduce inflammation and promote sweating during fever. It is also used to alleviate nausea and vomiting from any cause. It is well known as an anti-toxin especially for protecting against seafood poisons. This is why you always get a bit of shaved ginger when you order sushi.
But some of the other benefits of Ginger often go unnoticed. One of the best benefits from Ginger is, it's excellent anti-inflammatory properties. Some studies indicate that Ginger is as effective as common NSAIDS, such as aspirin, ibuprofen and Tylenol. In this usage, ginger can help with many arthritic conditions especially the type of arthritis that is more troublesome on cold, damp days. Its warming properties alleviate stagnation and promote blood flow which help stop pain and promote the movement of joints.
Another excellent use of Ginger is when it is combined with Turmeric (another medicinal plant from the ginger family). Then it becomes a wonderful formula for alleviating discomfort and pain during menstruation, especially when the discomfort is felt before or during the menstrual flow. This ginger combination is useful for migraine headaches, too, especially when there is nausea with the headache.
You can slice fresh ginger root found at your local grocery to make a tea or you can take them as capsules, which can be found at health food stores. |
