Tax Tip
What To Do If You Are Missing a W2
All W2's are supposed to be mailed by January 31st. If you have not received your W2:
- Contact your employer to find out when you can expect it.
- If you still have not received it by February 14th, contact the IRS at 1-800-829-1040 and be prepared to give your information plus the employer's name and address, your dates of employments, and your approximate earnings and Federal taxes withheld (this is typically available on your latest paystub).
- If you have completed the above steps and still have not received your W2 in time to file your return by April 17th, you may use Form 4852 as a substitute or file for an extension if you have reason to believe you may still receive the W2. Don't forget that any tax due is still due April 17th and not extended by filing for an extension.
- If you later receive the W2, you can file an amended return on form 1040X to report any discrepancies.
