Tax Tip
How Can I Reduce My Taxes for 2011?- Make Charitable Contributions - If you itemize your deductions, you still have time to make charitable contributions by December 31st. Make sure you get a receipt!
- Install Energy-Efficient Home Improvements - If you have not already received the maximum credits for the energy-efficient home improvements, then you can still take advantage of these credits by installing new installation, windows or water heaters that qualify for the credit. You can also make certain improvements in solar, wind, geothermal or heat pump property.
- Consider A Portfolio Adjustment - Check your investments to see if sales could benefit you before the end of the year.
- Contribute the Maximum to Retirement Accounts - Elective deferrals must be made by December 31st but you have until April 17th, 2012 to set up a new IRA or add money to an existing IRA and still have it count for 2011.
- Make a Qualified Charitable Distribution - If you are age 70.5 or over, the qualified charitable distribution (QCD) allows you to make a distribution paid directly from your IRA to a qualified charity and exclude the amount from gross income.
- Don't Overlook the Small Business Health Care Tax Credit
