This is our third edition of the Research & Graduate Studies e-newsletter.  Our intention is to bring to you the latest information regarding research and graduate studies at NSAC in a timely fashion. Enjoy and stay tuned for the next edition!
Welcome Dr. Chibuike Udenigwe!

Dr. Chibuike Udenigwe has recently joined the Department of Environmental Sciences as Assistant Professor of Health and BioProducts. He came to NSAC from the University of Guelph where he was an NSERC postdoctoral fellow. Dr. Udenigwe obtained a Ph.D. in Food and Nutritional Sciences from the University of Manitoba. His research program at NSAC is focused on utilization of food bio-products derived from animal sources in human/animal health applications. With his background and expertise in food/nutritional sciences, chemistry and biochemistry, Dr. Udenigwe is establishing a multidisciplinary research program at NSAC with the broader goals of enhancing value of the bio-products, understanding the molecular basis of their functions and training of highly qualified personnel, which will ultimately impact Canada's health and agro-based industry.

2012 Graduate Research Days

Graduate Research Days were held on April 19 and 20th, in the Riverview Room.  It was a well attended event that showcased the current research projects of our graduate students through both oral and poster presentations.  The group welcomed Dr. Patrick McGinn, NRC as the keynote speaker.

Over the two days there were great networking opportunities for the graduate students to interact with fellow students, staff and faculty.  A special thanks to NAGS for their help in organizing this event and to all the students for their participation.

Congraulations to Kevin Reeh, winner of the oral presentation category and Lori Balderston, winner of the poster presentation category (photo below).

2012 Research Excellence Award
 Research Excellence Award 2012
Congratulations to Dr. Balakrishnan Prithiviraj, who is shown above receiving the 2012 NSAC Research Excellence Award presented by Dr. Nathan Boyd (NSAC Research Committee).

Dr. Prithiviraj joined NSAC in September 2005 as an Industry Research Chair in Plant Stress Physiology, sponsored by the Department of Agriculture and Acadian SeaPlants Limited.  Since that time, Dr. Prithiviraj has established an extensive research program in marine bio-products investigating methods to improve plant health, in areas such as salt resistance, anti-infective compounds and pathogen resistance. Recently, his research group has been studying the health benefits of seaweeds using model organisms.

Together with academic and industry partners, Dr. Prithiviraj has succeeded in obtaining over $2.5 million in research funding from the most prestigious funding agencies, including the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, the Canada Foundation for Innovation, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and the Shastri Institute.  He also serves as the principal investigator for many industry-led projects with funding from the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, Atlantic Innovation Fund and the National Research Council Industrial Research Assistance Program.
