NSAC Dal Merger Communications Update
In October, the merger principles were released and the direction-to-date on a proposed governance structure was discussed at various meetings including special open forum meetings and at the most recent Faculty Council meeting.
The merger principles were developed to guide merger discussions and are central to maintaining the essence of NSAC while enabling its continued success.
A summary of the direction-to-date on the governance structure is as follows:
- The overall governance structure would serve to maintain the tradition of NSAC while supporting and building academic, teaching and research excellence while supporting economic development opportunities in Nova Scotia, nationally and globally.
- In merging as a single university, NSAC would be a faculty of agriculture and would remain a campus.
- The campus would maintain a local identity within the larger university identity.
- Academic responsibilities and authority would be the same as the other academic units of Dalhousie.
- NSAC would be led by a campus principal/dean who would provide strategic leadership to the campus accountable to Dalhousie's president and vice president academic and provost.
- The campus principal/dean would be responsible for aligning the agricultural mandate to academic program development and delivery, research priorities and external partnerships.
- The campusprincipal/dean would ensure effective and responsive student services and administrative support.
- The faculty of agriculture would have an advisory body with representation from government and industry. A member of the advisory body would also sit on Dalhousie's Board of Governors
To view the principles in their entirety and for more detail on the proposed governance structure please visit nsacdalmerger.ca We continue to invite your questions which can be submitted through this site for response.
Sincerely,
Peter Underwood, Chief Government Negotiator

Comeau a perfect fit at ACOA
Mike Comeau (Class of '82)
For about 10 years, now Mike Comeau of the Atlantic Canada Opportunity Agency has been a prominent figure in the Annapolis and Digby counties.
ACOA helps promote local economies and the federal agency has allowed many commercial and non-profit organizations to expand, while also aiding new businesses by giving them access to resources.
As a young student, Comeau pictured an idyllic future working with agricultural communities. It was a dream partially inspired by the owner of a local farm. "My boss often asked my opinion on things, even if he already knew the answer. It gave me the confidence I needed." More...

NSAC Students Honoured at Scholarship Banquet
Student Focused on Making a Difference
A chance encounter with the SPCA sparked a passion for animals that has led Ashley Hawkin to NSAC and a career in veterinary medicine.
"Before I came to NSAC, I volunteered with and fostered kittens for the Fredericton SPCA. I came to NSAC for the veterinary technology program in September 2010 and I can't emphasize enough that this is the field I need to be in," Ashley explained. "Veterinary medicine can be rigorous and demanding, both psychologically and physically and if you let it, it will change your life." More...

5K Homecoming Race
Hosted by Athletics, NSAC's Homecoming Race was held Oct 15 on the newly opened Cobequid Trail - NSAC Section. Running the trail and parts of the Bible Hill Rec Park, the competitors enjoyed the varied terrain and the challenge of the new course. Up until this year, the race has always been run through streets in Bible Hill and so many of the runners were pleased to have a different route. Many NSAC alumni participated in this year's race. Those included Jonathan Fuller, Jean Lynds, Audrey-Jo Vink, Rob Carreau, Ann Allen, Teri-Lyn Masters, Janice Cameron and Ashley Shepard. Photo: Rob Carreau (Class of '10), who finished first overall.
