Remembering Your Innate Wholeness
Lying within each of us is an innate and basic wholness. Zen Master Suzki Roshi said, "each one of you is perfect the way you are...and you could use a little improvement." As we hold this paradox, it is evident that each of us has the potential to shine so brightly in this world AND certain circumstances keep us from truly living from this place of wholeness.
We all receive conditioning from the day we are conceived that can perpetuate this feeling of not being enough. As we grow up, our parents unwillingly pass along the aspects of their lives that they have yet to heal from and integrate. Carl Jung stated, "the greatest burden a child must bear is the unlived life of the parents." We receive these generational transmissions from our parents and extended family that contribute to wholeness amnesia.
Then we emerge into a society where we are inundated with reasons why we are not yet complete. Until you look a certain way, drive a certain car, take a certain drug, etc. you are not going to be happy and whole. Well, allow me to de-bunk this painful myth! As we engage in a path of healing and transformation, we begin to heal from these conditions that are placed upon our basic goodness. More and more we begin to love and accept all parts of ourselves, even the things that scare, shame, and repulse us the most!
Clinical psychologist and Buddhist teacher Tara Brach, has coined the phrase "the trance of unworthiness" to describe the state many people find themselves in. Well people, it is time to wake up to the innate beauty, worthiness and wholeness that lies inside of you waiting to be tapped!
Another way we perpetuate this feeling of not being good enough is by believing our thoughts. Try this practice, the next time a judgemental, self-defeating thought arises in your mind, label it as a product of all this familial and societal conditioning. When we do this, we dis-identify with this thought having any sort of intrinsic validity. We then can take in this thought as information about what we have yet to integrate into our psychological make-up. Our psychological pain is on one hand complex and on the other hand simply the product of resisting information about ourselves, that if we were to acknowledge and engage in personal work upon, would help us actualize the conscious recognition of our wholeness.
When we can emerge from this "trance of unworthiness" and understand that each moment holds the seed to self-knowledge that leads to the flowering recognition of our wholeness, we can begin to shine as brightly in the world as we were born to do. Next time you are pushing any emotion, reaction, or situation away, you are saying "NO!" to the very information, if accepted and integrated, will lead to the acknowledgement of your natural state of basic goodness. Say "YES!" to what each moment offers you and slowly you will come to recognize your own wholeness and can offer the beautiful gift of recognizing this same wholeness in all whom you interact with.

Creating World Peace Begins with You!
Ever heard the idea that World Peace begins at home? Jack Kornfield said, "in this world, hatred never ceases by hatred, but by love alone is healed." We can feel into the validity of of this statement by reacting to an angry partner, friend, co-worker etc. and see the situation escalate further. When we can soften our reaction in a heated situation by stepping back and looking at what our highest intention is for the interaction in front of us, more often than not we can diffuse the intense situation.
It is easy to blame outside circumstances for the way you feel, what is not working in your life, or why you have lost that spark of vitality. It takes true courage to face those parts of ourselves that we don't want to see, forgive others and our self, and begin to take responsibility for our well being. By becoming more loving towards ourselves and others, we create the possibility for others to do the same.
When you are feeling helpless about issues that are happening around the world or with those whom you love the most, remember these words of spiritual teacher Thich Nhat Hanh, "if in our daily life we can smile, if we can be peaceful and happy, not only we, but everyone will profit from it. This is the most basic kind of peace work." Of course acting in this way authentically takes work and support to go inside of ourselves and find the barriers to living this potential.
