Student Service Project - URGENT!
The sophomore class student leaders of Shortridge Magnet High School need our help! These highly involved honors-level students plan to take on some heroic obstacles to lead their class to help our community's less fortunate population.
According to Tayjia Wright, sophomore class president and the president of the student-run organization called Students in Action (SIA), they are planning the students' community service project, Shortridge Helping Hand Resource Fair. On Saturday, April 23, 2011, 10am-3pm, they plan a community day at Shortridge to offer lunch, health screenings, gift bags with hygiene products for many of our inner city's homeless citizens living in shelters, especially women and children.
The event will be held at Shortridge in the cafeteria and gym. The students are looking for organizations/businesses to partner with them in a number of ways:
* Gift bag donations (hygiene products); non-perishable food items or monetary donation to allow students to purchase these items
* Booth space available to display and provide information about your business and/or services--Early-bird registration deadline - April 15th - $10; after April 15th - April 22nd -$15.
* Buffet lunch provider for up to 300 attendees
* Monetary sponsorship opportunities:
Title sponsor level ($5,000)
Blue Devils sponsor level - ($1,000)
White Devils sponsor level - ($500)
or any amount you wish to donate will be gratefully appreciated.
All monetary donations received over and above expenses will help fund other SIA projects. For more information, contact Tayjia Wright, President 10th Grade Class, Shortridge Magnet High School, 3401 N. Meridian Street, Indianapolis, IN 46208, shortridgehelpinghands@gmail.com or 317-529-3834. Or make your check payable to SMHS and mail directly to the school, ATTN: Shortridge Helping Hands.

News from the Shortridge Athletic Department - 2011
SAVE THE DATE! MARK YOUR CALENDAR NOW!
SATURDAY, DECEMBER 10, 2011 (Yes, December)
On December 10, 2011, Shortridge will play the John Marshall Patriots in a boys' Junior Varsity/Varsity basketball game, 6p at Shortridge. There will be two special ceremonies that evening; namely, between games we will honor any member of the 1968 state finalist team that can be in attendance that evening. Also, at half-time of the varsity game, we will retire the jersey of WILLIAM "BO" CRAIN, class of 1959.
This will be only the second jersey retired in the history of Shortridge. George Pillow, class of 1967, was honored in 2010. George and "Bo" are the only two Shortridge basketball players to be named Indiana All Stars and inducted into the Indiana Basketball of Fame.
The 1968 team is the only team that ever made it into the state finals. Coach George Theofanis, who passed away recently, will be remembered that night as well.
Any member of the 1968 team is asked to contact Shortridge Athletic Director, Steve Papesh, at 317-226-2842 or via email at papeshs@ips.k12.in.us with any information of the whereabouts of those 1968 team members.
FACT FINDER: The editor received numerous challenges to the aforementioned statement that Crain and Pillow are the only two to be named to the Indiana All Stars and inducted into the Indiana Basketball HOF.
There have been numerous athletes inducted to ONE OR THE OTHER; however, Crain and Pillow are the only two to receive BOTH honors, according to the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame website.
STUDENT ALUMNI ATHLETIC BOOSTERS (SAAB)
The athletic department continue to ask for your support for the many student athletic projects that are ongoing. Stephen Papesh, athletic director / vice principal, continues his request for financial assistance for the athletic program.
The school has received approval from IPS to build an NCAA-approved gymnasium that will allow ample space for both boys' and girls' athletic programs, lockers, and a HOME COURT for athletic competitions. Currently, vacated property north of the school is being razed for the future construction of the new gymnasium. The current gym is not NCAA approved by size nor handicap accessible, both requirements to host any high school-level events. Funds for this capital improvement project cannot be allocated for day-to-day equipment and expenses...those funds must be generated through donations.
Any financial support is gladly accepted in order to offset expendable materials. Make your check payable to: Shortridge Magnet H.S. (note SAAB) and mail to Mr. Papesh, 3401 N. Meridian Street, Indianapolis, IN 46208.

Dear Choir Members:
As all of you know, Don Neuen and Marilyn Davidson are not only our beloved high school music teachers but are also highly respected professionals who receive rather large fees for the workshops they lead all over the country. As they are donating their time to lead our choir reunion, we feel strongly that they should not have to incur any expenses for their generosity in being with us. We are asking everyone to please make a donation to help pay for Don and Marilyn's travel and hotel expenses.
PLEASE! NOW! - Here's a way to donate:
Write out a check to "Nancy Coyle", earmark it "Choir", and send it to her at: 5707 N. Oxford St., Indianapolis, IN 46220.
Check out the Class of 1961 web site: www.shortridge61.com, and click on "Choir Activities" for more details about the reunion.
