President's Message from the Shortridge H.S. Alumni Association...
Dee's photoThe Shortridge H.S. Alumni Association (SHSAA or SAA) has come a long way in a very short time to create what we believe will be a proactive organization targeting academic excellence exhibited by the legacy of Shortridge, its alumni, and our academic partners. The SAA Board of Directors strive to reunite alumni and be a catalyst for future Shortridge Magnet H.S. for Law and Public Policy graduates. As President, it is my pleasure to work with others who show an interest and commitment to help the students, the school, and the alumni maintain and expand these common goals. Our collective goal is to continue the legacy that, "A Disciplined Mind and a Cultivated Heart are Elements of Power." - Caleb Mills

We need YOU to become actively engaged in our or other efforts that target the future success of the students at the "new" Shortridge. There are so many opportunities, from tutoring students (see sidebar message), financial support for various projects, including: scholarship, athletic department, band, and others. The need is great; the resources are few.

The name of the school may have changed slightly; however, the academic goals remain as strong today as when each of us was a student at the school.  Thank you for your continued support!

Deloris "Dee" (Richardson) Duff - '59

President, Shortridge H.S. Alumni Association

Founding Members Legacy Guild

The Founding Members Legacy Guild was approved at the June, 2010, annual meeting, as a fundraising source for the Shortridge Legacy Scholarship Fund. Although donations for the Shortridge Legacy Scholarship Fund are welcome in any amount at any time, Founding Members Legacy Guild has multiple purposes: to strengthen the scholarship endowment to provide scholarships for deserving Shortridge Magnet H.S. graduates, grow SAA membership, and recognize alumni generosity who wish to support future graduates from Shortridge.

The fund drive commenced July 1, 2010, and will conclude on December 31, 2012, prior to the first graduating class in 2013. Founding Members' participation requires a minimum $500 or greater donation to the scholarship fund. Seventy-five percent (75%) of the donation will go to the restricted scholarship fund; twenty-five percent (25%) will offset alumni association administrative expenses. At the conclusion of the fund drive (December 2012), Founding Members will have their names memorialized on a bronze plaque placed on permanent display at Shortridge. This donation also entitles alumni to a five-year membership in the Alumni Association.

Please make your tax-deductible check payable to: Shortridge Legacy Scholarship Fund (Founding Members Guild on the memo line); mail c/o 5030 Guion Road, Indianapolis, IN 46254. With donors' permission, their names will be recognized on our website and future newsletters.

Class of 1965 45-year Reunion Efforts

Congratulations to the Class of 1965 for their 45-Year Reunion, one of only a few classes that have ongoing every five-year celebrations. However, this year's reunion may be one of their most significant and gratifying.

According to their update, "... for those who attended the reunion, through the efforts of Tom Greist, Hattie Byland, Jim Covert, and Sharon Butsch Freeland, the class volunteered to raise funds to purchase needed furniture for the new Courtroom in the Shortridge Magnet High School for Law and Public Policy. In gratitude for their initiative and efforts, Principal Brandon Cosby agreed to name the courtroom in honor of their classmate, Justice William E. McAnulty, Jr., who passed away in August of 2007. Capping a successful career as an attorney in Louisville, Bill was the first (and still the only) African-American Supreme Court Justice for the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The Shortridge facility will be named the Justice William E. McAnulty Research Center for Law and Public Policy. "

"The courtroom will be used for mock trials and, interestingly, for resolution of student conflicts. No more trips to the Dean of Boys'/Dean of Girls' offices. Rather, a student will make his or her case, represented by a student defender and prosecuted by a student prosecutor, before a jury of student peers, and agree to be bound by the jury's decision. The Indiana Appellate Court will begin using the Shortridge Courtroom in the Spring of 2011. It's also possible that the Indiana Supreme Court will conduct some pre-trial proceedings in the courtroom. In addition, Shortridge alumnus Judge Grant Hawkins has indicted the possibility of bringing an actual trial on site. The courtroom is fully wired for the broadcast of proceedings."

The fundraising goal, during the class reunion weekend, was to raise

$4,372 needed to purchase the judge's chair, jury's chairs, defendant's and plaintiff's tables and chairs. Incredibly, and to the visible surprise of Principal Cosby, the class of 1965 (with some attendees from the classes of 1966 and 1967), exceeded their goal by $1,000 and presented over $5,300 Monday, August 30th, just 72 hours after he asked for help to purchase courtroom furniture, and less than 48 hours after the project was announced during the reunion festivities.

"A second project on the "wish list" is a Judicial Wall of Fame, which will be mounted on the wall behind the presiding judge's bench and under the Shortridge seal. It will consist of etched bronze ceramic plaques depicting each of the 20 (or more?) sitting judges who are Shortridge alumni."  (Kindly provide the names of those justices who may qualify for this recognition. Send information to our email: SHSAA Email.

Initially, plaques for justices in the SHS Class of '65 -- William McAnulty, Anthony Metz, Cynthia Torain Ayers, and in the SHS Class of '67 -- Grant Hawkins, will be mounted on the Justices Wall.

The Class of '65 did not stop there! By September 15, the class organizers had received additional donations of $1,700. The total amount collected by mid September was $7,072, all of which is designated to furnish the courtroom. They continue to solicit donations until the courtroom is completely outfitted. To do so will require a minimum of $11,000; the class is short $4,000 of their minimum goal.

For those wishing to make a donation for this fundraising project, please make the check for your fully tax-deductible contribution payable to: Shortridge Magnet High School and write McAnulty Courtroom on the memo line. Send your donation to: Shortridge Magnet High School, c/o Jim  Covert, 611 3rd Ave., SW, Carmel, IN 46032-2083

Other Class Reunions:

If you wish to share news from your class reunion held this year, provide that information or photos that will appear in a future issue of NewsBriefs; photos can be displayed on the website. Send your news blast to: SHSAA Email

Is your class organizing a class reunion? If so, contact the alumni association at: SHSAA Email. We will assist with class lists from the Class Directory in our master alumni database. Also, we highly encourage and recommend the alumni associsation be provided with your class roster in order to update our master alumni database.

Already we've had an inquiry from an alumnus seeking information regarding a 60-year reunion for the Class of 1951, in 2011! Let us hear from any of you planning a class celebration for the next year...your classmates want to hear from you!

Our next issue will feature information regarding the Choir Anniversary celebration scheduled in 2011. As more information becomes available regarding the combined choir reunion, it will be posted in NewsBriefs and on our website.

Inasmuch as the SHS Alumni Association was reorganized only in 2007, and no prior class lists were available to us, we've spent the last few years trying to rebuild an electronic database of SHS alumni. We regret if you have not been notified of past all-classes reunion events; however, our efforts, thus far, have been primarily by word of mouth. If you know of other classmates who would like to be added to our alumni database, please have them contact us at SHSAA Email
