Jump Start Your Post-Partum Fitness Routine
While you're eager to tone up and wear your skinny jeans again, it's hard to find time to shower, let alone get back in shape! But by committing to a short and simple fitness routine and watching what you eat, you can return to your pre-baby weight in just a few months.
Here is how to get started: - First, talk with your physician before starting any fitness or weight loss program. Once you get the go-ahead schedule a 20- to 30-minute workout each day of the week.
- According to Dave Smith, N.A.S.M., C.E.S, P.E.S. and Premier P.T.S., you should begin by focusing on correcting the muscular imbalances that occurred during pregnancy. Strengthen areas such as your hip flexors and lower abdominals first when starting a post-partum exercise routine.
- By investing in some inexpensive equipment such as exercise tubes, some dumbbells and a stability ball, you can get a complete and effective total body workout in just one-half hour. Smith suggests doing an exercise called the Dead Bug, which is one of his favorites. In addition, stretching your hip flexors regularly will help alleviate low back pain that may have resulted from pregnancy.
In your initial workouts include lunges, and shoulder and chest presses. These are especially effective while resting your head and shoulders on a stability ball and maintaining your posture as if you were lying on a flat bench. To do this, engage your abdominals and your glutes, and push your pelvis to the ceiling. By recruiting more muscles during this exercise, you'll increase your caloric expenditure. This is especially important during brief exercise routines.- For a burst of cardio, toss in some jumping jacks at the end of each set to get even more calorie-burning benefits.
- Remember to stretch before and after your workout; it's such a simple thing to do and stretching offers big benefits like improved range of motion, circulation, posture and decreased tension and soreness.
- Finally, be mindful of holding your baby on the same side all the time. This will create an imbalance in your hips. In time, that could lead to hip pains during cardio or other forms of exercise. So, alternate baby from one hip to the other!
