Prepare For Worship
Fourth Sunday of Easter
Collect:
Almighty God, merciful Father, since You have wakened from death the Shepherd of your sheep, grant us Your Holy Spirit that we may know the voice of our Shepherd and follow him that sin and death may never pluck us out of Your hand; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. (LW)
Readings:
- Acts 4:1-12
- 1 John 3:16-24
- John 10:11-18
Meditation:
Jesus, the Good Shepherd, Lays Down His Life for the Sheep
The Lord Jesus is "the Good Shepherd" who "lays down His life for the sheep" (John 10:11). His life is not taken from Him, but He lays it down willingly, of His own accord, because He knows and loves the sheep. As the One sent by the Father, He has the "authority to lay it down," and the "authority to take it up again" (John 10:18). So has He done, and now He continues to love and serve as the Good Shepherd of the sheep by the voice of His Gospel. He thus calls all people into the fold of His Church, so that there may be "one flock, one Shepherd" (John 10:16). That is why the Apostles "were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection from the dead" (Acts 4:2). Since "there is salvation in no one else," His voice rings out to this day through the preaching of His name, "for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved" (Acts 4:12). His voice comforts our hearts against all condemnation and gives us courage to "love one another" and "to lay down our lives for the brothers," as He laid down His life for us (1 John 3:16, 23).

A mission opportunity in Latin America
Does your congregation send volunteers on mission work to Mexico? Are you traveling to Spanish speaking countries? Do you wish to leave something of lasting value behind? Here is something for children or adults who can read. A 128 page booklet that brings the stories of Jesus to life in colourful comic book style. Special fund raisers and donations made it possible for Immanuel Lutheran Church of Lethbridge, AB to purchase 10,000 copies of "Who is this man called Jesus - He lived among us" It is our intent to make them available as a free gift to people in Spanish speaking countries. Immanuel has already donated 5000 copies to LCC's Overseas Mission. If your congregation can make use of this resource or if you would like more information see the full story. You can also visit http://gospelcomic.com for background on the project or to download the Book or read online. |

CLS MATCHING GRANT CHALLENGE runs now until May 15, 2012!
The following excerpt is taken from a letter written by Interim President, Dr. Norman Threinen.
"1 Samuel 17 tells the story of a man named Goliath who challenged the Israelites to send one person out to fight him. Of course you know the end of the story: the boy, David, accepted the challenge and killed Goliath.
Challenges can be deadly! But they can also be fun, exciting, and rewarding. That brings me to the purpose of this letter to our faithful Friends of the Seminary.
A number of anonymous supporters have generously offered a challenge to everyone else who would be willing to support Concordia Lutheran Seminary. The individuals are challenging the Seminary to raise $80,000 before May 15th! If we do, they will match every dollar we raise dollar for dollar...continue reading
