Prepare For Worship
Third Sunday of Easter
Collect:
O almighty and eternal God, now that You have assured us of the completion of our redemption through the resurrection of our Lord Jesus, give us the will to show forth in our lives what we profess with our lips; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. (LW)
Readings:
- Acts 3:11-21
- 1 John 3:1-7
- Luke 24:36-49
Meditation:
The Preaching of Repentance and Forgiveness of Sins Makes Us Pure
The risen Lord Jesus taught His disciples "that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead" and "that repentance and forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in His name to all nations" (Luke 24:46-47). Therefore, St. Peter preaches repentance and forgiveness to the people of Jerusalem. As he proclaims that Jesus fulfilled all that "God foretold by the mouth of all the prophets" (Acts 3:18), he also convicts the people of their sin, because they "delivered over and denied" this Lord Jesus and "killed the Author of life." Yet God "glorified His servant Jesus" and raised Him from the dead (Acts 3:13-15). St. Peter calls the people to repent, so that their "sins may be blotted out, that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord" (Acts 3:19-20). Through this forgiveness of sins, and by faith in this forgiveness, the Father shows His love for us, in order that "we should be called children of God, and so we are" (1 John 3:1). Thus we hope in Him and are made pure even "as He is pure," because "He appeared to take away sins, and in Him there is no sin" (1 John 3:5)

CLS MATCHING GRANT CHALLENGE runs now until May 15, 2012!
The following excerpt is taken from a letter written by Interim President, Dr. Norman Threinen.
"1 Samuel 17 tells the story of a man named Goliath who challenged the Israelites to send one person out to fight him. Of course you know the end of the story: the boy, David, accepted the challenge and killed Goliath.
Challenges can be deadly! But they can also be fun, exciting, and rewarding. That brings me to the purpose of this letter to our faithful Friends of the Seminary.
A number of anonymous supporters have generously offered a challenge to everyone else who would be willing to support Concordia Lutheran Seminary. The individuals are challenging the Seminary to raise $80,000 before May 15th! If we do, they will match every dollar we raise dollar for dollar...continue reading

Reformation Heritage Bible Commentary: Colossians/Thessalonians
by Engelbrecht, Edward; Deterding, Paul
The great reformers' influence upon the Bible's interpretation and application could not help but revitalize the Church. This is as true today as it was five hundred years ago. The reformers taught with special insight due to their constant reading, study, translating, and preaching of the Sacred Scriptures. This commentary series shares with readers today insights from the reformers and faithful commentary that stems from their heritage.
Similar to the NIV People's Bible Commentary Series, this lay-level commentary allows readers to study the Word in a deep and meaningful way with devotional warmth and readability. Video, endorsements, and a current subscription offer can be found along with the full description at this link: ...more information.
