Prepare For Worship
THE FIFTH SUNDAY IN LENT
(The Annuciation of our Lord)

Collect:

Almighty and eternal God, because it was Your will that Your Son should bear the pains of the cross for us and thus remove from us the power of the adversary, help us so to remember and give thanks for our Lord's Passion that we may receive remission of sins and redemption from everlasting death; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. (LW)

Readings:

  • Jeremiah 31:31-34
  • Hebrews 5:1-10
  • Mark 10:(32-34) 35-45

Meditation:

In the Holy Sacraments We Share the Glory of the Cross of Christ

Jesus catechizes His disciples in the way of the cross, revealing that He will be condemned and put to death, "and after three days He will rise" (Mark 10:33-34). But the Twelve do not understand. Instead, they argue among themselves about who will be the greatest, with James and John requesting the places of honor on either side of Jesus in His glory. However, Jesus has come to make Himself the "slave of all" and "to give His life as a ransom for many" (Mark 10:43-45). He shares the true glory of His cross with all who are baptized with His baptism, and with those who drink His cup of salvation, the New Testament in His blood (Mark 10:39). By these Holy Sacraments, the Lord makes Himself known to all His people, forgiving their sins "from the least of them to the greatest" (Jer. 31:33-34). Though He is the very Son of God, "He learned obedience through what He suffered" and so became our great high priest, that we may enter His glory by the way of His sacrifice (Heb. 5:8-10).

Returns to summer team ministry

CREW Ministries announced today that they will be returning to summer team ministry after a year sabbatical. CREW Ministries' chairperson, Michael Schutz, said that a plan is underway to recruit and train summer teams to assist churches with Vacation Bible School and camp programs this summer. A Lutheran based ministry that dates back to 1988, CREW Ministries has gained a reputation for recruiting, training and providing youth and young adults the opportunity to use their gifts on short term mission teams that assist churches and camps by providing musical leadership, puppets, drama and general ministry support for summer programming. Schutz said: "Our hope is to have at least one team that will travel throughout Canada assisting churches with their summer ministry programs as well as alumni-led teams that will be available for single week events."

MP Stephen Woodworth submitts motion to Parliament regarding legal rights of the 'not yet born'

MP Stephen Woodworth submitted a motion to the Parliament of Canada of February 6 to examine Section 223 (1) of the Criminal Code of Canada which states that a baby does not have legal rights until it is completely proceeded from the body of its mother.  A brochure, a related poster and a petition for Parliament to help foster the discussion throughout our churches and country, especially during the next four months when this issue will be before our elected officials are available for viewing and download at http://notyetborn.wordpress.com/

The materials are designed to encourage discussion in a fact-based and respectful manner. The site where these documents are posted avoids any political or religious affiliation but provides materials strictly related to this issue.  We encourage the members of our ABC District to make use of the materials on this website.

Journey to the Cross: An Easter Learning Experience CD-ROM
by Kelly Bailey McCray

 book cover

Journey to the Cross is an outreach and educational event for your congregation and community. Through activities based on Scripture, participants experience the joy of Palm Sunday, the disappointment of Judas' betrayal, the devastation of the crucifixion, the jubilation of the resurrection, and so much more.

This family program invites children and adults to walk the path that Jesus walked. Small groups of people walk to 13 sites for activities that relate to the Passion event. At each station, their senses are engaged through experience-focused activity that teaches the biblical Passion account.

The Journey to the Cross CD-ROM includes everything you need.  See the link for a full list of contents and a promotional video.
