Prepare For Worship
The Sixth Sunday after the Epiphany
Collect:
O Lord, mercifully receive the prayers of Your people who call upon You, and grant that they may know and understand the things they ought to do and also may have grace and strength to accomplish them; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. (LW)
Readings:
- 2 Kings 5:1-14
- 1 Corinthians 10:(19-30) 10:31-11:1
- Mark 1:40-45
Meditation:
All Things Are Made New by the Washing of Water with Jesus' Word
"Moved with pity," the Son of God has come in the flesh, willing and able to save us. He goes to the Cross to give His body as a sacrifice and to shed His blood for the forgiveness of all our sins. Now He stretches out His hand to touch us with His body and His blood in the Sacrament, and with His Word He cleanses us of all iniquity (Mark 1:40-42). Already in the Old Testament, by the promise of His coming, the Word that He spoke by His prophets had the power to cleanse and restore the flesh of fallen man. Thus, "according to the word of the man of God," Naaman, the Syrian warrior, was cleansed of his leprosy when he washed in the Jordan, and "his flesh was restored like the flesh of a little child" (2 Kings 5:14). By the washing of water with His Word, we also are cleansed of all our sins and set free from the burden of the Law. As little children of God, we now seek the good of our neighbor and "do all to the glory of God" (1 Cor. 10:24-31).

Hymnals Available:
Our Concordia Academy Lutheran School has had to close it's doors indefinitely, and we are looking to find new homes for the 60 Lutheran Service Book hymnals we had received as a gift for our school's future growth. The plan adopted by our school's Board of Directors is that, since we received them as gifts, we would like to pass them on as such also (shipping from Moncton NB not included); the only condition we would attach is the one we received with the gift, that the gift plates inside each book be left in as a memorial to the now disbanded congregation of St Matthew Lutheran Church, Stratford, Ont, that donated them to us in the course of the final disposing of their assets.
We would also ask the recipient school, mission, or congregation to consider a suggested donation of $10 per book to help our Concordia Academy to clear out its remaining debts (which currently and unofficially amount to just over $1,000 - to be confirmed). We have 60 hymnals on hand, all in pristine condition except for having had CPH's donor bookplates applied inside the cover as indicated above, and we are trying to get new homes for all of them elsewhere since the people of St Matthew also richly supplied our congregation and PEI preaching station with hymnals too and we now have enough here already for our needs. If you are interested, please send an e-mail to Rev. David Millette at d.milette.moncton@gmail.com

Meet our Australian Brothers and Sisters
This week we invite you to meet St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Parkes, NSW, Australia (map it - street view available) and their Parish Sole Pastor Rev.Robert Hamann Their profile page lists their current members at 83. No website is listed. Please remember the congregation of St. Paul's Lutheran and Rev. Hamann in your prayers this week. |
Resource of the Week Defense Never Rests by Parton, Craig A This powerful critique of American Christianity chronicles the spiritual pilgrimage of one man and provides a defense of the pure Gospel. This unique book is divided into two parts. First, a spiritual autobiography of the author, describing his journey from unbelief to American Evangelicalism and Campus Crusade staff work, to his true home in the Lutheran church. Secondly, a hard-hitting critique of shallow, pop-style worship and theology, The Defense Never Rests sets forth a Lutheran approach to apologetics (the defense of the faith to unbelievers).
