Prepare For Worship
The Third Sunday after the Epiphany
Collect:
O Lord God Almighty, because You have always supplied Your servants with the several gifts which come from Your Holy Spirit alone, leave also us not destitute of Your manifold gifts nor of grace to use them always to Your honor and glory and the good of others; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
Readings:
- Isaiah 9:1-4
- 1 Corinthians 1:10-18
- Matthew 4:12-25
Meditation:
The Lord Manifests His Glory through His Office of the Holy Ministry
By His coming in the flesh and by His preaching and miracles, the Lord Jesus shines the light of His Gospel upon "the people who walked in darkness" and "who dwelt in a land of deep darkness" (Is. 9:2). He has also "multiplied the nation" and "increased its joy" (Is. 9:3) by calling disciples to Himself from the ends of the earth. For this purpose, He calls Peter and Andrew, with James and John, to follow Him and be "fishers of men" (Matt. 4:19). As Jesus did, they also go forth "proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction among the people" (Matt. 4:23). They preach the foolishness of the Cross of Christ as the very power and wisdom of God. This word and preaching of the Cross divides "those who are perishing" from "us who are being saved" (1 Cor. 1:18), but it unites the Church, the one Body of Christ, "in the same mind and the same judgment" (1 Cor. 1:10).

Mission Prayers - January 2012
(http://lutheranchurch.ca/missions.php) January 15 Almighty God, at baptism You lit the fire of faith in our hearts. Now we pray for Your direction in our lives. Teach us to be still and listen for Your voice, to hear the plans You predestined for us from our births. We lift up prayers of thankfulness for Your love which surrounds us daily, and Your guidance in all we do. We pray for the missionaries, pastors, and church workers who have heard and answered Your call. Give them direction wherever they serve, Your protection in adversity, and Your faithfulness as they show Your love to a waiting world. Through Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. |

Resource of the Week A Love for Life by Di Mauro, Dennis A Love for Life - Christianity's Consistent Support of the Unborn, by Dennis Di Mauro, examines the question, "Is abortion ethical?" The answer to this question is often obscured by rhetoric, slogans, and politics. And the media message on abortion is often of little help. When the typical American opens up her morning newspaper, she sees the topic debated between pro-lifers and pro-choicers but receives little information that could help her make an informed moral decision
