Director's Corner Nancy E. Gwinn

We got an Emmy! You could have knocked me over when our Board member Linda Gooden presented me with this award at our June meeting. This is an Emmy award from the Northwest region (no, I don't get to go to Hollywood), but it was a grand surprise and testimonial to the wonderful work done by Lockheed Martin's team. See below and take a look!

Adopt-a-Book Event

FSG Rare BookIt's not too late! We still have a few tickets left to our first ever Adopt-a-Book Event with the Italian Embassy as a partner! Join us at the Smithsonian Castle on Thursday, September 13, at 6:00 p.m. and browse through troves of distinctive and iconic volumes from the vaults of the Smithsonian Libraries Special Collections. While feasting on Italian food and wine, learn from expert curators and conservators why these books deserve to live on for future generations.  And you might even have a conversation with Galileo or other Renaissance celebrities who will be on hand. Each book featured will be available for

Vanessa conserving a book "adoption." Gifts will benefit the Libraries' acquisitions and preservation programs. Donations are fully tax-deductible charitable contributions. For questions about the event, contact silrsvp@si.edu or call 202-633-2241. To register: http://donate.sil.si.edu/product-p/aab-event.htm

Smithsonian Libraries Wins Emmy Award
Smithsonian Libraries Emmy Award

What has gold wings and is over a foot tall? An Emmy statue! The Smithsonian Libraries was thrilled to hear that our participation in a video collaboration project resulted in a 2011 Emmy Award for Graphic Arts from the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, Northwest Region. Together with a Creative & Strategic Services team from Lockheed Martin, the Libraries  produced a two-minute long overview of our work, featuring our staff, spaces, and collections. Public Affairs Specialist Liz O'Brien took the lead on the project, with the help of countless staff participants at each filming location. Please click to see behind-the-scenes footage in our Emmy award winning video!

Smithsonian Libraries Celebrates New Gifts!

Robbins Library In July, longtime Smithsonian employee (and recently retired) Ruth Osterweis Selig made a $50,000 gift to establish the Rollyn Osterweis Krichbaum Memorial Program Endowment for the Public Understanding of African Art and Culture at the Warren M. Robbins Library,  National Museum of African Art.  Ruth established this endowment to honor the career of her late identical twin sister Rollyn who also spent her career as a museum professional, working as Editor at the Detroit Institute of Arts. Ruth continues her involvement at the Smithsonian as a Research Collaborator in the Department of Anthropology, serving as Co-Editor of the publication, AnthroNotes, and as Assistant Editor of the National Museum of Natural History Director's newsletter, Newsflash, Understanding Nature and Our Place In It. Also in July, the Smithsonian Libraries received a $50,000 gift from Lockheed Martin to support the Smithsonian Libraries Air & Space Digital Outreach and Education Program.
