MARCH 2011

From the Director

  Nancy Gwinn, Libraries Director Image
What a pleasure it was to introduce the grand new space of the National Museum of Natural History's Main Library to Smithsonian staff, along with friends of, and donors to, the Libraries from all over the Washington area. We raised champagne glasses to everyone who helped with the project, from Jerry Conlon, Tom Woodward, and the staff of the Office of Facilities, Engineering and Operations for their fine job of design, construction, installation and cleaning to museum director Cristián Samper who allowed us the space. We also toasted the library staff who lived through it all. The well-attended ceremony was testimony to the fact that the Natural History Museum and the Smithsonian supports the Libraries and appreciates the service that we give. The feeling is mutual, and I thank you all.
— Nancy E. Gwinn, Director

L-R: Scott Miller, Deputy Under Secretary for Collections and Interdisciplinary Support; Eva Pell, Undersecretary for Science; Secretary Wayne Clough; Natural History Museum Director Cristián Samper; NMNH Main Library Director Ann Juneau; Smithsonian Libraries Director Nancy Gwinn
On March 17, the Libraries celebrated the National Museum of Natural History Main Library Reopening. With 175 guests in attendance, Secretary Clough, Cristián Samper, Nancy Gwinn, Eva Pell, Scott Miller and Ann Juneau cut the red ribbon marking this milestone. The Main Library holds over 540 journal subscriptions and 160,000 volumes on biology, ecology, evolution, biodiversity, geology, and paleontology. New features of the library include wifi access, computer workstations with printers available, study tables with outlets, collaboration areas, and a coffee bar. The library also has two conference rooms which can be reserved by appointment, containing DVD and Blu-ray players, video-conferencing capabilities, and interactive SMART Boards, which are digital white boards that function like a touch screen of a computer. Please come visit our new digs! Libraries staff is on hand to assist with inter-library loans and locating books in the stacks. Find us on the first floor of the East Court (CE-107).

SIL Advisory Board Travels to Panama

The winter 2011 SIL Advisory Board meetings were held at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) February 28 to March 5. In addition to the meetings, the Board visited Gamboa, Barro Colorado Island, Mireflores Locks, Bocas del Toro, and Parque Natural Metropolitano during the action-packed week. The Board members were "wowed" by the research being done at STRI and the Libraries' ability to support this research.

BHL Institution Council Meetings at SIL

On March 11, the Biodiversity Heritage Library (BHL) Institutional Council met at the National Museum of Natural History. The annual meeting is held to cover issues related to governance of the BHL, prioritize the work of the technical development team, and discuss the ongoing sustainability going forward of the BHL. The BHL Institutional Council is comprised of the directors, or their designates, from each of the twelve member libraries. To date, the BHL has scanned 46,478 titles, 89,937 volumes and 33,487,634 pages.

The Birth of a Corporate Pop-up Book

Andrew Baron, Paper Engineer
Monday, April 18, 2011 at 12 noon

Andrew Baron was the kind of kid who loved to take his toys apart to see how they worked. By age twelve, he had become intrigued with wind-up phonographs and soon his interests expanded to encompass 19th century clocks, vintage radios, antique phonographs, classic cars and other fascinations. In 1985, after twelve years of vintage machine restoration as a hobby, he opened Andy's Restoration Service, which further cultivated the skills that now inform and enhance his paper engineering. Andrew brings excitement, attention to detail and mechanical expertise to the world of pop-up books and cards. His experience includes everything from creating original paper designs and functional engineering, to editorial, pre-press production, production consulting, cost-reducing refinements and manufacturing support.
