A Message from Janet & Michael
Fall is in the air and we're ready for it! We are already thinking about the upcoming holidays.

We're excited that this month you'll be able to meet some of our artists during American Craft Week - October 7 - 17! See the schedule below.

When you're downtown for MumFest stop by to meet artist Dan Nelson of Raleigh, painting in front of the gallery. If you attend the symphonys at the Palace you might have seen him doing a painting of the audience and players last year. We'll have a show for him in March!

Just In! clocks

These Computer Clocks are individually handcrafted high tech timepieces and incorporate a hard drive platter or a CD as the clock face and an embellished circuit board as the background. Other models are crafted from CDs, floppy disks, drive housings, video laser disks or main frame drive platters. Each clock offers a whimsical view of our rapidly changing technology, preserving it as art rather than landfill. In addition to their functionality they help contribute to the overall recycling effort by utilizing obsolete, discarded or surplus computer components.

The clocks require no software installation and only need rebooting with a "AA" battery about once a year. Very cool from $35-$52.  See more by clicking here.

Soft sculpture Witches from Susanne Coatta.

Susanne uses vintage fabrics, ribbons and trinkets she collects. Each piece is one of a kind. We love the way she paints the faces! See more by clicking here!

Dragonfly for the wallFrom our friend Laurel Yourkowski we've received some great new dragonflies, frogs and geckos.

One of the interesting things about their work is that they make their own dichroic glass. The only artists we know that do that.

Which means their work always has a different look than any other you'll see.  Their prices are great, frogs and geckos start at $35.  The dragonfly measures 10" and can sit or be hung, inside or out, its price is $70.

sticks calendarEveryone loves our sticks furniture, we now have calendars featuring some of their charming images.

We've also just received some new lazy susans from their studio.

The pieces just keep getting better and better!

Elaine O'Neill Fabric Collage Art Continues through October

Elaine creates textile collages, each image using a myriad of fabric colors and texturnew bern elaine oneiles, all painstakingly sewn together to create whimsical and realistic portrayals of scenes from the mountains to the coast.

Elaine starts with a simple sketch and approaches the creation of each textile through snip and cuts, using her scissors like a painters brush, slowly revealing the image, with layer upon layer of fabric, stitched into place using a variety of colors and textures.

New Bern City HallHer hope is to evoke the feeling of pleasure and delight, where life is simple, sweet and full of endless possibilities.

Elaine grew up in Maine and began sewing as a girl. She attended the Philadelphia college of Textiles and Science earning a BS in textile design. She is great-granddaughter to a lighthouse keeper, granddaughter to a farmer, daughter of an ardent seamstress, all of which contributes to memories she depicts in her textile collages.

We hope you'll stop in and see her fabulous work, if you can't, we have some of her pieces on our website, click here!  We ship of course!

American Craft Week

Write an Essay and Win a gift certificate for $250

I am on the board of the CRAFT Retailers and Artists Assocation for Tomorrow - CRAFT - and for the second year we are sponsoring American Craft Week October 7-16. We will have demonstrations at Carolina Creations during that week.

Across the nation artists, galleries and museums will be celebrating American made crafts.

This year we are holding two essay contests. You can enter one or both topics. There will be one prize for each topic.

Essay Topics:

Topic 1:  Cultural roots of American craft

Many forms of American craft have their roots in one of the multitude of ethnic groups that make up the rich cultural life of the U.S. today, or in a particular period of our country's history. Talk about one of these that has particular meaning to you, and tell us its "story". (Example:  sweet grass baskets and their roots in African slave groups, and their agricultural use in early America).

Topic 2:  Importance of craft in contemporary American society

Making, buying, collecting and learning about American craft is "hot" now for many reasons. Why? Trends such as eco-awareness, reactions against the flood of cheap imported goods, recognition of the importance of buying locally, a desire to use one's hands in this digital age are all some examples of what is driving a renewed interest in American craft. What do you think the reasons are for American craft's resurgence today? What do you think means for the future of American craft?

Contest Rules

  • If entering both topics, submit them separately
  • Deadline is October 30, 2011    You must include the following:

A Message from Jan & Michael

My ankle is healing, I am out of the cast and wearing a boot, and walking with crutches. I still can't drive, which is making me crazy, but otherwise things are going well. I've started going into the gallery, it's good to be back!

We're starting to get geared up for the upcoming holidays. Christmas cards have arrived, I'm always impressed that people start getting them ready so early! We've gotten in lots of great handcrafted ornaments - but it's too early to put them out yet. If you can't wait you can see some of them on our website by clicking here.

It's such an exciting time of the year!

It starts with Mumfest, then we have American Craft Week, GhostWalk, ArtWalk then our Dickens of A Christmas!.

Downtown New Bern, what a great place to be!!
