Giving Back

This is the 5th year we have had our Valentine Show to benefit the Craven County Schools Art Programs and the 2nd year for the Empty Bowl Program. Read more about them both below.

We are honored to be a part of this community and are pleased that we can "give back" in some small way.

Valentine1

Valentine Show and Sale Benefit and the

1st ArtWalk of 2011!

We are hosting the 5th Annual Valentine Card Show and Sale to benefit the Craven County Schools Arts Programs.

Each year over 1000 Valentines are created by Craven County school children, hung in a show at Carolina Creations and sold with all proceeds going back to the schools art programs.

The gallery purchases the card stock and envelopes and donates them to the schools. Over 25 art classes from throughout the school system create cards using hand made paper, pastels, clay, collage and other mediums.

For the children it is exciting to see their work in an art gallery, for the teachers it is a way to raise some much needed cash to help buy supplies, and for Carolina Creations it is a way to give back to the community for their support for the past twenty one years.

Many of the cards are up, just in time for the first ArtWalk of the year, Friday, January 14, 2011 from 5-8 pm. A reception for the students will be Thursday, January 20 from 4-7 pm, the public is invited.

This show continues through February 14.  For more information call the gallery at 252-633-4369.

Empty Bowl Project A Grass Roots Movement to End Hunger

Empty Bowls is an international project designed to fight hunger, personalized by artists and art organizations at the community level.  RCS will again partner with Craven Arts Council to present New Bern's second Empty Bowls event on Febraury 10, 2011 at Temple Baptist Church.  Tickets are now on Sale at the Bank of the Arts.

There are three ways in which you can participate in this campaign:
Empty bowl project
Blessing bowls by Jan Francoeur

Purchase a bowl at Carolina Creations or the Craven Arts Council & Gallery.

These
galleries will be selling handmade pottery bowls that you can purchase and immediately donate to the Pottery Campaign for use in the Empty Bowls Fundraiser. You'll pay for the bowl and leave it at the gallery, we will transport purchased bowls to the Project.

The bowls, at Carolina Creations are made by Janet Francoeur and cost $20.

Or you can create your own Paint your own bowl at The Accidental Artist, 220 Craven Street, New Bern. Telephone:252-634-3411. Paint a bowl during regular studio hours and in turn donate that piece. The Accidental Artist will also offer the opportunity for customers to have the bowl painted for them for an additional charge and will have some pre-painted bowls for sale to donate as well.

Or create a bowl at Art Materials & Ballantyne Framing during one of two build-a-bowl
events. Participants need no experience to participate in this event. They will follow a
step-by-step process in making a bowl out of clay that will be fired, glazed, and then donated
to be used in the Empty Bowls Fundraiser. Art Materials & Ballantyne Framing is located
at 219 Middle Street in downtown New Bern. Call 252-514-2787 for additional information.

New Work by Ann Allen

Sterling silver, colored gemstones, 14kt gold, engraving, all come together in Ann's work to create pieces that will become your favorites!

Ann talks about her work.  "When I was 13 years old, I started to make beaded jewelry and sell it in New York City at Washington Square Park. This started a lifelong love affair with jewelry.

After receiving my BA in sculpture Art from Brooklyn College in 1969, I got a job as a social worker working with abused women and children. While working, I continued my readings on ancient rituals, magic symbols and goddess worshiping societies.  I decided then that I would make a change in my life and make amulets for woman to remind them of their power-and to not give their power away.

I was self taught for 13 years and then I enrolled at State University of New York at New Paltz in their Masters of Metal Smithing program in 1983. I completed my studies in 1985.

I have taken workshop s at Peters Valley, NJ, Penland, Penland NC, Wildacres Retreat at Little Switzerland, NC and at ArtCenter Manatee, Bradenton Florida.

It is my belief that everyone should be able to buy something hand made. Since I make "talismanic" pieces and I believe that every one should have some of that magic, I try to price my pieces so even a person who is not wealthy can afford my work"
