Featured Artists for December
Paintings by Brenda Behr "On the Plein Air Trail With Brenda Behr - paintings featuring the landscape of Eastern North Carolina.
Painted mostly en plein air (on location), the collection of oil paintings reflect the spontaneity with which they were painted. On a sunny day with the light constantly changing, the artist's challenge is to paint fast and ala prima (first stroke).
Traveling the roads of eastern North Carolina Brenda fell in love with the landscape outside her car windows and it all became subjects for her paintings.
Stop in and see Brenda's paintings or click here to view them on our website.
Pottery by Jim and Shirl Parmentier North Carolina potters Shirl and Jim Parmentier have been making pottery together since 1975. They work on their vessels as a team, both in design and in the making of the pieces. They live in western North Carolina.
Their vessels are made with a high fired stoneware clay body. The clay body is transformed into vessels using coils and slabs of clays.
After forming the shape of each vessel is altered with files and rasps while it is in the hardening state of drying then they alter the surface by carving designs into the piece.
Their pieces are glazed with ash glazes by dipping, spraying or pouring then fired in a gas car kiln which takes about 18 hours from start to finish. Slow cooling takes another 36 hours before the kiln can be opened. The glaze results with a gas kiln are always a true mystery and surprise. Click here to see more of their work on our website.

Empty Bowl Project A Grass Roots Movement to End Hunger
Empty Bowls is an international project designed to fight hunger, personalized by artists and art organizations at the community level. RCS will again partner with Craven Arts Council to present New Bern's second Empty Bowls event on Febraury 10, 2011 at Temple Baptist Church. Tickets are now on Sale at the Bank of the Arts.
There are three ways in which you can participate in this campaign:
Purchase a bowl at Carolina Creations or the Craven Arts Council & Gallery.
These galleries will be selling handmade pottery bowls that you can purchase and immediately donate to the Pottery Campaign for use in the Empty Bowls Fundraiser. You'll pay for the bowl and leave it at the gallery, we will transport purchased bowls to the Project. The bowls, at Carolina Creations are made by Janet Francoeur and other gallery artists and will cost $20.
Or you can create your own Paint your own bowl at The Accidental Artist, 220 Craven Street, New Bern. Telephone:252-634-3411. Paint a bowl during regular studio hours and in turn donate that piece. The Accidental Artist will also offer the opportunity for customers to have the bowl painted for them for an additional charge and will have some pre-painted bowls for sale to donate as well.
Or create a bowl at Art Materials & Ballantyne Framing during one of two build-a-bowl events. Participants need no experience to participate in this event. They will follow a step-by-step process in making a bowl out of clay that will be fired, glazed, and then donated to be used in the Empty Bowls Fundraiser. Art Materials & Ballantyne Framing is located at 219 Middle Street in downtown New Bern. Call 252-514-2787 for additional information.
