Letter from the Chair
Sometimes it is hard to believe how fast one season moves to the next. Since play concluded in the Spring, so many great things have happened in our club that I wanted to highlight just a few.
Early in the summer two MPS teams advanced to the US Youth Soccer National Championship - where one team (U16 Girls MPS Strikers) was a National runner-up and the other (U18 Girls MPS Dragons) was awarded its age group's Fair Play award.
Throughout the summer, quite a few MPS players and coaches participated on teams in the United Soccer League (USL) Super-Y program affiliated with the Washington Freedom and their performances on the field earned them trips to Tampa in November to compete in the USL Soccerfest - the 12th Annual North American Finals for USL.
In late August, construction on the turf field upgrade of the Linway Terracesite began, meaning that our next premier playing surface is now only a few short months away from reality. In the Spring of 2011, we expect to begin upgrade work at Spring Hill #7 - which, when it comes on line in September 2011, will be the 5th synthetic turf surface that MYS members have substantially funded.
And as our Recreation season started, MYS welcomed DC United legend Jaime Moreno and his teammate Marc Burch to our fields as they helped kickoff the fall season with autographs and an obstacle course at Spring Hill Elementary.
In closing, please remember that the strength and success that our players show on the field begins with the respect our coaches, parents, spectators, and volunteers (who serve in many roles throughout this organization) demonstrate on and off the field.
Warmest regards, Maureen Dalbec MYS Chair

Field Development News The Linway Terrace Field project broke ground in late August. Site preparation and grading began in earnest as we move forward with our target to have the project complete in time for play in the Spring 2011 season. Field upgrade work on the Spring Hill #7 site is expected to begin in the Spring of 2011.

"It will be a great benefit for all our members to have another premiere field starting next spring season." said Chairman Maureen Dalbec.
This field will go into MYS's available inventory of fields so Recreation, Travel, MPS and US Soccer Development Academy teams will have opportunities to use this field. The FDI initiative continues to make progress on the Board of Director's goal of having all teams train and play their games on safe, high-quality fields.
MYS is also pleased to announce that the next field upgrade project will start construction in the spring at Spring Hill #7 once the parking lot expansion and renovations are completed at the Recreation Center. The new synthetic turf field at Spring Hill #7 is expected to be ready by the September 2011 season opener.
"Again, this is great for our members" said Dalbec. "The FDI (Field Development Initiative) is one of the most important goals of our club (along with superior coaching) and provides one of the greatest benefits to our young players," stated Dalbec. "These environmentally beneficial fields will provide space for our children in our community for years to come" said Bill Gray, the MYS Field Development Director.
MYS continues to explore additional FDI opportunities that are consistent with the goals of the club and reaffirm our desire to be "good neighbors" with those who live in close proximity to all of the fields we are able to access.

D.C. United and VW Help MYS Kickoff the Fall Season |
|
|
On Saturday, September 18th, D.C. United legend Jaime Moreno and his teammate Marc Burch paid a visit to MYS during recreational soccer play at Springhill Elementary where they signed autographs and our young soccer players were able to play on the D.C. United obstacle course.
In addition to D.C. United, VW also visited the Springhill soccer fields and through a special VW program where soccer parents can test drive new VW cars, MYS was able to raise over $2,300 to help fund a variety of club initiatives. |

Board Approves FY 2011 Operating Budget for MYS
The MYS Board of Directors recently approved the club's operating budget for Fiscal Year 2011 which runs from July 1, 2010 through June 30, 2011. For the second year in a row, the budget includes no increases in registration fees for any MYS programs (though a few travel teams may see small increases as a result of changing age groups or cost adjustments for coaching and/or league fees). The most significant changes incorporated into the budget for FY'11 include the addition of up to four new paid staff roles (three part-time) and the addition of the U8 MYS Juniors training program which will start with 60+ players this fall. With the growth and increasing complexity of the club's business operations, the Board felt it was time to add paid staff to spread the work load, relieve over-tasked volunteers, and position MYS for more consistent and sustainable service delivery. Since incorporation in 2002, MYS has had only one paid business/administrative worker, Eileen Hopkins, the Club Administrator, whom all of you probably know. The Board is now targeting three part-time positions to help with bookkeeping, fields, and general administrative activities. The Board has also provided for an Executive Director's position to be filled, hopefully, by next spring. In the budget, each of the club's three programs (Recreation, Travel, and Premiere Soccer Academy Training and Camps) cover their own operating costs, contribute substantially to the club's common costs (e.g., fields, administration, etc.), and help fund MYS's Field Development Initiative activities. MYS has already funded the turf field now under construction at Linway Park Terrace which should be ready for play by next spring. With the cash flow from the FY'11 budget and cash on hand, MYS should be able to fund the next field targeted for a turf upgrade, Spring Hill Rec Center field # 7. Please direct any questions concerning the club's business operations to the MYS Treasurer at treasurer@mcleansoccer.org. |

MPS U10 Girls United Green Place 2nd In Two Tournaments
The MPS U10G United Green battled their way to consecutive second place finishes at the Dulles tournament in late August and the OBGC Cup over Labor Day weekend.
Over four games at Dulles, the team enjoyed the fruits of its commitment to technical development by compiling a 2-1-1 record. After a 0-0 draw with the Herndon Saints, the girls earned a 2-0 defeat over a tough Sterling Orange squad, then upended an extremely gifted NVSC Majestics side in a 3-2 thriller. The United girls dropped a 2-1 decision to the same Majestics in the finals, but, nevertheless, the team demonstrated that it is clearly a team on the rise.
The United Green duplicated their second place finish at the Dulles tournament with a tremendous effort at the OBGC Capital Cup Labor Day tournament. In taking home second place medals for the second consecutive weekend, the girls defeated an NBC- LRTC that had beaten them 7-1 last year in the semis finals before falling 2-1 in an incredible contest versus SAC United (a team that defeated them 13-0 a year before). The girls are to be commended for their amazing progress, which is a tribute to their drive and the MPS training methodology. |

MYS Settles IRS Audit
As noted in a recent edition of the Sweeper, MYS was the subject of an audit by the IRS this past spring. The primary focus of the audit was MYS's classification of its coaches and trainers as independent contractors as opposed to employees. In September, MYS settled the audit by agreeing to treat certain members of its staff as employees in the future and paying one year's worth of back payroll taxes though no interest or penalties were assessed. The IRS raised no other concerns as a result of its audit. While this change of worker classification will add slightly to MYS's annual operating costs, these additional charges were built into MYS's current operating budget approved by the Board. We do not foresee substantial changes to how the coaches and trainers do their work on the field nor in how MYS members interact with them. If you have questions about this or any other MYS financial matter, please contact the MYS Treasurer at treasurer@mcleansoccer.org. |
