| MYS Players, Families and Fans: |
As we approach the fall 2010 playing season, we wanted to take a moment to reflect back on some of the outstanding accomplishments of MYS players during the previous year. Two MYS / MPS teams advanced to the US Youth Soccer National Championship Tournament, but as the stories below demonstrate, these two teams are not the only ones in McLean playing at a high level.
We hope that all of you will take a moment to join us in celebrating the victories of these young athletes - not all of which get measured on the scoreboard.
Enjoy! |

The McLean MPS Strikers U16G, coached by Clyde Watson and German Peri, represented Virginia and Region 1 at the USYS National Championships July 20-25 in Overland Park, Kansas. They then went undefeated at the Region 1 Championships in Barboursville, WV, playing the state champions from NJ, Pennsylvania East, Maine, and Massachusetts, to earn a spot at the National Championship tournament.
At Nationals the Strikers compiled a 2-1 record in preliminary play losing their first match to Colorado Rush Nike 2-1, then defeating NASA 12 Elite II (GA) 1-0 and Minnesota Thunder Academy 94 Blue 1-0 to make the final. The Strikers met the undefeated Region 3 Champion Solar 94 Red (TX) in the championship game. It was an exciting and competitive match with the Strikers getting some early chances on goal and their share of possession throughout. Solar 94 Red scored in the 33rd minute to go ahead. Late in the second half the Strikers pushed numbers forward to try and find the equalizer but Solar held on for the win.

U12 Girls Teams (Rec) Compete in Top SFL Flight
Five powerhouse teams took the field in the U12 Girls Group 1 Suburban Friendship tournament, including two of the eight McLean U12 House teams. Heading into the tournament, a strong team from Loudoun had romped through the regular season at the top of Division 1 without giving up a goal. In the first game of the tournament, held at Lewinsville Center in McLean, Bill Cheng's McLean 3 team squared off against the undefeated and untied Loudoun 4. Rising to the occasion and playing their best soccer of the season, the Cheng team scored twice against Loudoun and hung on for a 2-2 tie.
The McLean 4 team, coached by Caneel Cotton and Lars Liebeler, faced a formidable opponent from Annandale who had feasted on opponents all season long, running up a record of 5 wins, no losses, and 2 ties -- the ties coming with McLean 1 (coached by Adam Anthony) and McLean 5 (coached by Scott Carr). In a tense and physical game, McLean 4 led early on a left footed blast by Caroline Watkins. Annandale fought back with precision crosses and strong goalkeeping. With 5 minutes left to play, Annandale led 2-1. A flurry of shots on the Annandale goal in the closing minutes resulted in a handball and McLean 4 was awarded a penalty kick. Greta Liebeler nailed the PK with a low hard shot to the left corner. The game ended in a 2-2 tie.
McLean 4 later defeated Sterling 7 by a score of 2-1 (goals by Caroline Watkins and Azita Peters), and came back on Sunday to edge Bill Cheng's McLean 3 team by a score of 2-0. When the dust settled, both McLean 4 and Annandale 8 had 10 game points resulting in a tie for first place in the group. Based on a plus-one goal differential, Annandale 8 was crowned U12 Girls Champions. McLean 4 took home the second place trophy. The awards ceremony was marked by excellent sportsmanship, and more importantly, root beer floats for all competitors.
McLean 4 - the Loch Ness Monsters - completed the season with a record of 7 wins, no losses, and 4 ties. Team Members include Azita Peters, Catherine Carris, Caitlin Dozier, Greta Liebeler (co-defensive MVP), Racquel Sequiera (Goalie MVP), Skylar List (co-defensive MVP), Jane Lee, Molly Dunlap, Allie Clarke (Most Improved), Revi Wood, Emily Esposito, and Caroline Watkins (Offensive MVP). submitted by Lars Liebeler |

U11 Boys (Rec) Compete in House Tournament
The U11 Boys House Gold Division tournament was held on Saturday June 12 at Spring Hill ES. Coach Tony Hsu (and assistant George Saile) were used to closely contested matches during the regular season; in fact 3 of those 7 games resulted in draws. No surprise then when the first tournament match versus Coach Auza's team, despite an early goal, ended 1-1. We won our second game against Coach Peterson's team 3-0; a goal late in the second half decided the tie-breaker in our favor (Coach Auza's team had also won their other game but with fewer goals)! Perfect team attendance at our tournament! The coaches are very proud of these boys: keepers Aidan Kemp, Jenya Onufrak, and David Siegel; forwards Rashid Areikat, Darren Hsu, and Andrew Spafford; mid-fielders Kareem Alattar, Sean Kilduff, and Daniel Park; defenders Thomas Clarke, William Kodama, Arnold Leigh, and Danny Saile.

Round robin play continued on Sunday against a physical and skilled Loudon team. Madness went up two goals and withstood a furious rally by Loudoun in the last several minutes to win the match 2-1. The final game against Nova 2 was a defensive gem by the Madness back line, which cleared dangerous balls with precision. Aggressive midfield play also keyed the 3-1 victory.

| McLean U12 Boys #4 Win SFL Division 6 Tournament | |
The U12 Boys McLean 4 won the championship of the SFL tournament (Division 6). It was an exciting back and forth game, as Miran Schendel scored to put us up 1-0, then they tied; then Jake Barnett scored to put us back in the lead, and they tied us. Then, Joseph Marcos scored on great header off a corner kick, and they tied us again. With less than two minutes to go, we were all preparing for penalty kicks when Christian Franco come to the rescue with a beautiful goal. So final score was McLean 4: 4 and Soccer on the Hill 3: 3. It was special for our team as two of our long time players are moving back overseas: Gustav Krausing and Miran Schendel. A great way to send them off.

| McLean U16 Boys #4 Perservere and Succeed Off The Field | |
Mclean 4 U-16 team began the season like gangbusters winning its first three games easily. Following a narrow 1-0 defeat to another undefeated team, the rest of the season saw a series of draws and mostly close defeats. After a 2-1 loss in the first tournament game, te squad earned a third place / consolation game as its "swan song" 19 of the 20 members of my squad showed up early or on time for our final game--the 20th was injured--which was won 9-1 against a shorthanded opponent.
While the final record was bittersweet, the team played with good humor, good sportsmanship and as a team all season. They are a great bunch of kids who enjoy the game and it is a pleasure to see them both enjoying soccer and maturing into young men. I look forward to all of them returning for the fall season.
