Letter from the Chair
Excitement about soccer in the USA is approaching all-time highs and so is the excitement about the great things happening right here in MYS.
First, I would like to tell you that we are very excited by the outpouring of public support that we have received in our efforts to upgrade the field at Spring Hill #7. The personal letters sent to Supervisor Foust and volume of signatures on petitions of support played an important role in demonstrating the deep commitment of our club and its membership to the efforts of the Field Development Initiative.
The public hearing on June 10th gave the club and the community a chance to be heard on the issue. I believe that the County officials who arranged the hearing and whose efforts impact us so profoundly deserve our sincere appreciation for all of their efforts. I want to thank all who attended the meeting and regardless of the outcome, I left assured MYS is an incredible organization with amazing volunteers and supporters
As an organization we owe a huge debt of gratitude to Rich Maresco and Bill Gray for all the time, energy and effort they have put forth on behalf of all the members of MYS. I remain hopeful Spring Hill #7 will be turfed and look forward to working with everyone to make this a reality.
We are also excited that three MYS teams - MPS Strikers (U16 Girls), MPS Dragons (U18 Girls), and MYS Freedom (U19 Girls) - will represent Virginia as VYSA State Champions in the Region I Regional Championship Tournament to be held July 1-6, 2010, in Huntington, West Virginia. The Region I winners go on to play the US Youth Soccer National Championships to be held July 19 -25, 2010, in Overland Park, Kansas. Best of luck to all three teams!
Finally, many teams responded to Mike Slavik's request for news of their accomplishments to be included in this edition of the Sweeper. We were excited that so many of our coaches and managers responded with team accomplishments - so many in fact that we have decided to have a special edition of the Sweeper in July that will publish all of these responses. So if you haven't sent in your news, there is still time. Send them to communications@mcleansoccer.org before July 15th to be included.
I hope all of you enjoy a safe and happy summer - see you on the pitch this fall!
Warmest regards, Maureen Dalbec MYS Chair |

Improving Skills On Your Own
Soccer America |
By Claudio Reyna
© 2010 Soccer America, 1140 Broadway New York, NY 10001 USA A player can always improve his fitness by working out hard. He can comprehend certain tactics by studying the game. But how far he goes will be determined mainly by how well he has mastered ball skills. Those are acquired by playing, day after day, year after year.
A player who really wants to excel will spend as much time as possible playing small-sided games when he has playmates, and juggling and kicking against the wall when he's on his own.
I spent a lot of time hitting the ball against the side of the house when I was a growing up. If my mother complained about the noise, I'd hop down the retaining wall at the end of our property to the office-building parking lot.
I'd use that wall -- hitting the ball with both feet, seeing how long I could return the wall's passes without losing control. I found out later that so many pros spent lots of their childhood doing that.
Dennis Bergkamp, the great Dutch striker who scored and set up hundreds of goals for Ajax Amsterdam, Arsenal, and the Dutch national team, said that when he was a youth player at Ajax, they had little three-foot-high walls. He would knock the ball against the walls for hours. Every time he hit the ball, he'd know whether it was a good touch or a bad touch. He'd do it over and over, trying to establish a rhythm.
Whenever I saw Bergkamp slotting a perfectly placed ball past a goalkeeper or making a precise pass, I thought of him practicing against the wall.
Kicking against the wall is an excellent way to work on improving your weaker foot. You can back up and practice shots on goal, or move close to the wall and work on passing, because where there's a wall, there's a teammate.
You can practice trapping and work on your first touch by controlling the ball before you kick it, or hit it back first time.
Passing the ball against a wall from close distance takes timing and coordination. Hit the ball faster, and you've got to react faster and get a rhythm going. It almost feels like you're dancing.
Practicing the correct striking of the ball over and over helps it become second nature. It has to be, because in a game a player doesn't have time to think about his form or approach. Under pressure, everything is more difficult. Mastering technique while playing on your own is the first step to being able to do it right in a game.

(Claudio Reyna was named the U.S. Soccer Federation's Youth Technical Director in April 2010. Reyna played nearly 13 years in the top-tier leagues of Germany (Bayer Leverkusen, VfL Wolfsburg), Scotland (Glasgow Rangers) and England (Sunderland, Manchester City). He represented the USA in four World Cups, and captained the Americans to a quarterfinal run at the 2002 World Cup, where he became the first American selected to the FIFA World Cup all-star team.)

Field Development News The Linway Park Field project is moving forward and we are still on target to be complete before the start of the Spring 2011 playing season.
This regulation, full-sized field will measure 120 yards x 75 yards when finshed and have small bleachers. The full-size footprint will enable the surface to used by many age groups - from our youngest players who can use the field sideways for multiple games to full-sided games for our U13 and older teams. It will be available for scheduling and use by Recreation and Travel teams. Usage will also be offered to other MYA sports in accordance to County guidelines. MYS remains hopeful that the County will respond favorably to the efforts to improve Spring Hill #7 and that this work will coincide with parking improvements at the Rec Center. This field - if approved - would come on line also in 2011.
MYS continues to explore additional FDI opportunities that are consistent with the goals of the club and reaffirm our desire to be "good neighbors" with those who live in close proximity to all of the fields we are able to access. |

McLean Youth Soccer Association Pending Change in Coaches' Relationship with MYS
This spring, MYS was the subject of an audit by the IRS. The primary focus of the audit seems to be MYS's treatment of its coaches and trainers as independent contractors. The IRS's position is that these individuals should be treated as employees. Many of you may remember this issue from the highly publicized IRS case in 2007 involving Fairfield United Soccer Association in Connecticut.
While the audit is still in progress, the Board of Directors of MYS has decided to minimize the club's exposure to future liabilities by converting all its coaches and trainers from independent contractors to employees beginning with the fall 2010 season. We do not foresee substantial changes to how the coaches and trainers do their work on the field nor in how MYS members interact with them. While these changes will add costs to MYS's operations, we will make these changes without raising members' fees this fall and without impacting coaches' pre-income tax compensation. At this time, it does not appear the audit will impact other areas of MYS's operations. When the audit is finalized, we will share the full results with you, our members. |

In Closing...
In each of the Sweepers I have recently put together, I have ended with a request for members to send me pictures and news items. I am pleased to say that the recent response was so strong that we will have a Special Edition of the Sweeper in July that will just focus on team accomplishments from the Spring 2010 season.
The deadline for submissions will be July 15th, so there is still time if you have not sent something in already. These accomplishemnts DO NOT have to be based on winning championships - all contributions are welcomed! Thank you!
