Letter from the Chair

I wish to thank everyone who was able to take time from their busy schedules to join us at the MYS Cup this year.  MYS had a great turnout and those in attendance saw some really great soccer being played on the pitch featuring many current and alumni MYS players.  It was wonderful to have Supervisor Foust on the field presenting the MYS Cup trophy to both schools - Langley Saxon Boys and McLean Highlander Girls teams each one their match.

Speaking of fields, we are very pleased and excited by the strides being made by the MYS Field Development Initiative (FDI) lead by Rich Maresco and Bill Gray.  MYS and the McLean Community are well on the way to getting our next, new turf field built at Linway Terrace Park.  We are looking forward to the community meeting to discuss future field development projects on June 10th, and hope you will come out to support the initiative.  Click here to learn more about the latest on the FDI front.

It is hard to believe that the Spring 2010 season is rapidly approaching its close and soon the soccer world will turn its attention to South Africa and the World Cup competition.  We will get to see this game we love played at the highest level by the greatest players over the next several weeks.  But let's not forget the coaches.

All of the players competing in the World Cup likely began their path to this stage under the tutelage of countless dedicated coaches and trainers.  Nearly 4,000 boys and girls playing on MYS recreation and travel teams this season have had the opportunity to hone their playing skills under the watchful eyes of our own dedicated coaches and trainers - both professional and volunteer.  At the end of this season and before you head off to your summer plans, I hope all of you will join me and take a brief moment to personally thank all of the men and women who have chosen to play such a formative role in the lives of the youth who play in MYS.

Warmest regards,
Maureen Dalbec
MYS Chair

ACLACL Knee Injuries & Injury Prevention Seminar - Spring 2010
Learn Techniques to Help Protect The ACL
ACL Injury

Epidemiologic studies estimate that almost 200,000 individuals sustain an ACL injury each year in the United States. This estimate is low for women, because ACL injury rates are estimated to be 2-8 times higher in women than in men participating in the same sports. The average cost for surgical repair of an ACL tear is approximately $11,500, not to mention the costs associated with osteoarthritis and degeneration of the knee joint through the lifespan associated with this injury.

MYS, in conjunction with the professional sports trainers from Explosive Performance, will conduct a seminar on ACL Injuries and Prevention on Wednesday, May 26th at LP2 at 7:00 pm.   This seminar is open to all who wish to learn more about this important topic.

This lecture will educate parents on:
-The mechanism of injury associated with an ACL tear
-Surgery and long-term implications of injury
-Which athletes are most at risk for injury and why
-Injury Rehabilitation and more importantly INJURY PREVENTION

FDIField Development News

The Field Development Initiative (FDI) Committee has announced that the Lin Way Park Field has been approved for an upgrade to a synthetic turf surface and construction will begin later this fall. Final field drawings are being created and will be sent to the County for approval this summer. The timleine for this project is to be complete before the start of the Spring 2011 playing season.

This regulation, full-sized field will measure 120 yards x 75 yards when finshed and have small bleachers.  The full-size footprint will enable the surface to used by many age groups - from our youngest players who can use the field sideways for multiple games to full-sided games for our U13 and older teams. It will be available for scheduling and use by Recreation and Travel teams. Usage will also be offered to other MYA sports in accordance to County guidelines.

MYS hopes to have a second field upgrade follow soon after Lin Way Park work and the site proposed is Field #7 at the Springhill Recreation Center.  A public hearing has been scheduled to discuss this proposed field development project.

The Springhill facility is already slated to undergo a parking lot expansion project by the county this fall. This expansion will eliminate one small grass playing field. The field project if approved, will replace two smaller soccer grass fields. Construction would begin later this fall or next spring.

The hearing will be held at the McLean Government Center on June 10th at 7:30pm. Instructions will be sent for anyone who wishes to attend this meeting.  As we embark on this and other field development efforts, we will look to the support of the entire MYS community to demonstrate our commitment to the benefits that the gain approval of this new turf project.

As agreed upon, other MYA sports will be granted 20% usage according to County guidelines.

MYS Field Policy Reminder

Please remember that all MYS players, friends and family members who attend practices or games need to be good stewards of our field resources and set the right example for those who are our guests at games on these fields.

Please remember:
  • Pick up and properly dispose of all trash.  If it isn't yours, do us all a favor by just picking it up.
  • If a trash can is overflowing, please take the trash with you and dispose of elsewhere.
  • While we love our pets, they are not allowed to come to MYS sanctioned events.  Please leave your pets at home.
  • Consider using refillable water bottles to reduce trash impact at fields (and mark that bottle with your name just in case).
  • If there has recently been inclement weather, please make sure to check the Field Status page of the MYS Website.  If the fields are closed, please refrain from playing on them.  Even if they are not officially closed, please carefully evaluate the condition of the field to ensure that play will not damage fields that may not have drained or dried.
Thanks for your help!
In Closing...
One last reminder, all of the things that MYS is able to accomplish depend, in large part, on the dedication and efforts of our players, coaches, parents and of course our volunteers.  We hope to use the MYS Sweeper to point out important accomplishments and highlight newsworthy items to the club.  Help us by sending in your photos and story ideas.  Thank you!
