Letter from the Chair

After a long and very white winter, spring has finally arrived!

The flowers and trees are in bloom, the daylight is brilliant and long, and spring soccer is well underway.  This spring we have more than 3000 players participating in the MYS recreation and travel programs.

Let's remember all the members of our community as we resume our regular routine of soccer practices and games - let's watch for players and pedestrians walking and running around the fields and to and from the parking lots, be mindful and respectful of neighbors who live near the parks and schools, and remember to demonstrate good sportsmanship to our teammates, opponents and referees.  And, as always, remember to say thanks to the many wonderful volunteers who make soccer in our community possible.

It is with great sadness that MYS reports the passing of George Pavlis.  On behalf of the entire MYS community we express our deepest sympathies to the Pavlis family, especially Becky and Nikos.

There are lots of opportunities to watch some great soccer this spring including cheering on the DC United or Washington Freedom, or just stopping by any field in McLean on the weekend to cheer on the MYS home teams.  There is also the MYS Cup being held May 7th at McLean High School and featuring many MYS players.  I hope to see lots of familiar faces at games this spring.

Go Green!   That's MYS Green and a friendly reminder for all of us to be environmentally friendly and to pick up the bottles and trash at the fields -  leaving them in better condition than when we arrived.

As we kick off a new season of exciting youth soccer in McLean, we thought we would take the opportunity to kick off a brand new look for the MYS Sweeper and for other communications from the club.

We have chosen Constant Contact to provide regular, graphically enhanced email communication to our members.  Your email addresses are still under our control and we will not be sharing them with parties outside of MYS.

If you have any questions about the Sweeper or our communications efforts, please contact Mike Slavik, Director of Communications for MYS at communications@mcleansoccer.org or the MYS Administrator, Eileen Hopkins at admin@mcleansoccer.org.

We hope you enjoy this new approach to communicating important MYS and MPS information to you and we appreciate your feedback!

Warmest regards,
Maureen Dalbec
MYS Chair

FDINewsField Development News

The Field Development Initiative (FDI) Committee has been working with the County for appropriate additional fields to upgrade to artificial turf. John Foust, our Dranesville District Supervisor, has recently approved the next field location at Linway Terrace Park. Construction should start later this year.

We expect the next site location to be announced in the upcoming months.

MYS has a stated, long-term commitment to build up to nine total synthetic turf / all-weather fields. Linway, will be the soccer club's fourth, joining previous development at LP2 and the US Soccer Fields at Springhill #2 and #3 already completed.

These next FDI efforts will be exciting additions to the quality of play for our members. Additionally, they will increase the safety for all field users, enhance soccer development and have a positive environmental impact in our community.

Memoriam for George Pavlis
Moment of Silence
Moment
On Sunday, April 11th, the MPS 93 Celtic Green faced off against the DCST Spartans in the first game for both teams in the Spring season in NCSL U16 Division 1 play.

The Celtic Green took the field following a moment of silence to honor the memory of long-time MYS member and volunteer coach, George Pavlis. George was the founding coach of the first MPS team in this age group, the MPS Olympic. The Olympic team went on to win the Virginia State Cup Championship at the U13 age group in 2007 under coach Trevor Parker.

The five remaining members of the Olympic wore their retro-Olympic team warm up shirts for the game. In fitting and poignant fashion, George's son, Nikos, scored on a PK to win the game in the last 30 seconds of the match. Final score MPS 93 Celtic Green 2, DCST Spartans 1.

One last reminder, all of the things that MYS is able to accomplish depend, in large part, on the dedication and efforts of our players, coaches, parents and of course our volunteers.  We hope to use the MYS Sweeper to point out important accomplishments and highlight newsworthy items to the club.  Help us by sending in your photos and story ideas.  Thank you!
