Balanced Water

Balanced water is the result when all of your chemical parameters are where they should be, and thus "balance" each other.

The key components of water balance are pH, Total Alkalinity, Calcium Hardness and Temperature, as measured using the Langelier Index of water balance.

While the range of these levels are effected by several factors most pools should fall into the listed ranges below.

pH levels between 7.2 and 7.8 are suitable for swimming, while levels between 7.4 and 7.6 are ideal.

Total Alkalinity should be between 100 and 120.  If you use a Salt Water Generator levels should be around 60 to 80.

Calcium Hardness in a plaster pool should have CH levels between 250 and 350 if possible.  In a vinyl lined pool there is no need for calcium, though high levels can still cause problems.

Even if you spend time on winterizing your swimming pool in preparation for the colder months, there will still be a few tasks to perform to open your pool up for use in the spring. If you've winterized your pool, your spring-time tasks will be relatively easy, but there's still plenty to do.

Step One: Plan Ahead

Grab what you need before you start the work. If you stored pool accessories such as hoses, plugs, and clamps indoors over winter, seek them out, and check whether any cleaning, maintenance, or replacement is needed for those items. If any items need replacing, take them to the store with you to make sure you purchase the right items as replacements.
