March 8th is the deadline to apply for the 2010 Coastal Entrepreneur Awards. Winners receive recognition and publicity through the Wilmington Business Journal, WWAY-TV3, UNCW, and more in addition to being highlighted during the May 21st award event. Anyone can nominate an entrepreneur and company so please take a moment to complete the short online application.
March 24th Wachovia Speaker Series
Earl Galleher
The Wachovia Entrepreneurship Speaker Series continues on March 24th @5:30pm when the EC hosts entrepreneur Earl Galleher. Earl is the founder and CEO of Basho, a high-growth tech startup based in Boston. Prior to Basho Earl served as Executive Vice-President at Akamai Technologies and a Series A investor. He helped grow Akamai from a $10 million company to a $4.4 billion public corporation before exiting. This special event also provides an opportunity for EC members to meet UNCW student entrepreneurs. Registration Required
Panel Launches Entrepreneurial Discussion
EC Panel Discussion
The Center hosted a special panel discussion on Feb 24th focusing on our regions entrepreneurial economy. The distinguished panel provided a perspective and strong recommendations for how to highlight, attract, grow, and leverage entrepreneurism in Southeastern North Carolina. With over sixty entrepreneurs, public and business leaders in attendance the conversation extended into an overall discussion that the Center staff is currently transcribing into video and text format to enable the discussion to continue online at the EC website in the coming weeks.
Entrepreneurial Statistical Fact: Venture Capital Investment declined by 37% in dollar terms to $17.7 billion in 2009 and 30% in deal flow to 2,795 according to the National Venture Capital Association.

Dr. Matt Wood
Matt Wood
Dr. Wood is an Assistant Professor of Management at UNCW and holds a Ph.D. from Southern Illinois University. Prior to his academic career, he was a third generation owner of a commercial printing company. Matt's research focuses on entrepreneurial cognition, decision making, and the unintended consequences of entrepreneurial action. He is currently collaborating with the EC on "The Unforeseen Risk of Entrapment as the Result of Successful Entrepreneurial Action".
