Greetings!

February will forever be the month representing heart, love, romance and relationships.  This year, please consider shifting your viewpoint... to the relationship between a parent and a child.  Read on for a detailed look into the current affairs of a family heart...

Why Should Dad Care?

A recent study by The Ohio State University suggests that in families with young children, the parents were more likely to have a stronger and more supportive co-parenting relationship if the dad was more involved in play activities than in caregiving activities with the child. On the flip side, if the dad spent more time in caregiving activities (i.e. preparing meals, bathing the child, etc.), the parents were more likely to be less supportive and more undermining towards each other.

Given that today's dads have taken on significantly more responsibility in the home and family than previous generations of fathers, this is an interesting and, at first glance, a potentially concerning finding.

This increased likelihood of tension between parents when dad helps out with the kids might be due to the mom's response to the father. The study noted that, "fathers' increased involvement in caregiving might also arouse negative maternal gatekeeping behaviors (a particular type of undermining behavior) as mothers consciously or unconsciously try to protect their authority over parenting."

From the Executive Director...

Sadly, one thing that has changed significantly through time is the health and cohesion of America's families.  More families than ever struggle with drug and alcohol addiction, gang involvement, crime, and poverty.  Our youth suffer the consequences of their parents' poor choices. The presence of a father in the home statistically gives children a much better chance for successful living, according to the studies.  Yet fathers are incarcerated, addicted, or otherwise absent at the highest rates in history.  At Youth for Christ we have recognized that supporting the family will also support our youth.

YFC is also experienced at mentoring teenage parents - that's right, children having children.  For this reason, YFC was recently invited to deliver a national fatherhood curriculum in the Fresno Juvenile Justice Campus.  Read more about the Fatherhood Initiative here.  Up to 20 teenage boys, many of whom are already young fathers, will be mentored in what it means to be a great dad.  Over the course of 14 weeks the boys will be challenged to look at the love, commitment, and responsibility required to wear the badge of Fatherhood.  We are eager to see how the truth transforms lives - for generations to come.
