Keeping Kids Drug-Free
Clovis West Campus Life kicked off the new school year September 16. We munched on pizza, played some crazy games and watched a short video promoting Campus Life. The main focus of the meeting time was to get students excited about the year, have them think about why they continue to come to Campus Life, and to think about friends they can invite. We spent some time talking about the excuses their friends give them for not coming to club. Homework, sports, choir, band, no ride, etc.... All the usual excuses. We talked about how to overcome those excuses. Then I asked "So why else aren't people coming?" "They're out getting high." came a response. "Get them here; they can get high afterward." "What?" That sent a shock through the room. "Are you saying it's OK to get high?" What a great opportunity for discussion. I asked how many of them know that there are people doing drugs at Clovis West. Every hand went up. I asked how many of them personally know someone who uses drugs. Every hand went up. I asked how many of them know that their friends/acquaintances that are using drugs need to make better decisions. Every hand went up. The reality is there are kids from all walks of life, every demographic and socio-economic group that are involved with drugs and alcohol. We don't do ourselves any favors by pretending the problem doesn't exist. We need to educate ourselves about the dangers and warning signs of drug use so we can have meaningful discussions with our kids. We need to be the influence in their lives so they can make good decisions. Making good decisions begins with having "the mind of Christ". (1 Cor. 2:16) This is the foundation and why we share Christ with kids. For information about recognizing possible signs of trouble, follow this link to CNN.com. |
