Canadian Century highlighted in Wall Street Journal and National Affairs Journal |
Executive Editor of the Weekly Standard Fred Barnes highlighted and quoted MLI's Canadian Century in his July 21st article for the Wall Street Journal, "How Spending Cuts - not Higher Taxes - Saved Canada", in which he discussed the fiscal reforms in Canada during the 1990s. Barnes also quoted Canadian Century in a journal article he wrote on Canada's resurgence in the Summer 2011 issue of National Affairs, "Lessons from Canada". He wrote, "As America struggles over spending and debt, Canadians watch with wonderment. A new book, The Canadian Century: Moving Out of America's Shadow, points to a role reversal - a strong Canada and a weak America."

On July 19th, the Ottawa Citizen published an op-ed by MLI author Ian Lee who discussed a number of important reasons to modernize the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) in Canada. In his July 2nd column in the Ottawa Citizen, "What makes Canada really great", MLI's Brian Lee Crowley wrote that democracy, diversity and free health care don't even make the list. He was invited on the Charles Adler radio show on July 4th to discuss the American economy, the deficit and much more. Brian's July 16th Ottawa Citizen column, "Some things are worth dying for", discussed the "two great weaknesses in the peacekeeping ideology as the sole role for Canada's military". On July 22nd, he discussed interprovincial subsidies and equalization payments on the Rutherford radio show. On September 21st we will hold an event marking the centenary of the famous election of 1911 that shaped Canadian politics for a century on topics as diverse as free trade, Canada's military and the role of the business community in politics. We will be joined by the co-authors of a new book on the subject, Canada 1911: the decisive election that shaped the country, as well as a powerful panel of some of the most acute observers of 21st century Canadian politics, including Jack Granatstein and Derek Burney (Rideau Club, 5:00 - 7:00 p.m.). The next week we will launch a four-part series of historical debates based on the popular series presented by the Royal Ontario Museum in 2010-11. History Wars is a series of provocative debates exploring some of the most compelling subjects in Canadian history. On September 27th the topic of the debate will be: Pierre Trudeau: Canada's most disastrous Prime Minister (6:30 p.m., location tbd). The next debate will be held on November 11th at the Bronson Centre in partnership with the Free Thinking Film Society.
