"We love Canada...a model for the world...a great story to tell"
On Canada Day weekend, MLI Managing Director Brian Lee Crowley introduced more Canadians to The Canadian Century on one of Canada's most popular weekly political radio shows... The House on CBC. In conversation with Rita Celli, Crowley provided an introduction to the Macdonald-Laurier Institute's first book publication and a primer on why Wilfrid Laurier was just a 100 years ahead of his time. The Fadden Files
In a blog post series on the recent controversy surrounding the head of CSIS, Richard Fadden, Brian Lee Crowley dealt with many of the questions that were swirling at the time. Read the series...Fadden Files I: Is Fadden right about Chinese influence?; Fadden Files II: Should Fadden have named names?; Fadden Files III: Should Fadden be making comments like this, even if they're true?; and in Fadden Files IV: Should Fadden be backing away from his remarks? You can read Crowley's conclusion that, "Richard Fadden has done a service to Canada."
Financial Post full of it...the Canadian Century, that is!
The editorial pages of the Financial Post on July 2nd were chock full of reference to MLI's first book, The Canadian Century. Writing of Canada's current standing in the world, William Watson noted: "...the turnaround in our image - to the extent the world thinks about us, that is - is unmistakable. It may not yet be The Canadian Century that Veldhuis and Clemens foresee in their new book, co-authored with Brian Lee Crowley, but it does seem to be the Canadian Moment."
Right alongside, co-authors of the book, Jason Clemens and Niels Veldhuis, cautioned that we must not lose our fiscal way as a nation.
Uniting the left?...Get a reason!
There has been a lot of talk about coalition government this year, both abroad and in Canada. Much of the Canadian chatter was precipitated by the election, in May, of a new government in the UK. As is well known now, that election led to the Conservative/Liberal-Democratic coalition that installed David Cameron as the new British PM.
What of the notion of a coalition of the "left" in Canada, as was repeatedly discussed prior to the House of Commons departing for the summer break? Just before that hiatus began, in the National Post editorial pages, Brian Lee Crowley posited the central argument that had been missing from the discussion: Before you form a coalition, you need a reason... Read the full National Post Op-Ed.
Subsequently, the Post asked Dr. Crowley to participate in a podcast discussion about the coalition idea as part of their Full Comment series. Click here to listen.
Canadian Century in Foreign Policy Magazine
In June, at the request of the prestigious Foreign Policy magazine, the co-authors of The Canadian Century produced an article about what Americans might learn from Canada's experience. That article has just been published and is available here. An audio version is also available.
