Creating a Simply Organized Life
Letting Go Strategies
January 2011
 Greetings!

The other night I watched back-to-back episodes of "What Not to Wear" (I secretly want a style intervention for myself). After the show I had an overwhelming urge to edit clothing out of my closet!

Out went the stuff that no longer fits, stuff I haven't worn in at least a year and stuff that my fashionista daughter has advised me not to wear. I did struggle with a few blouses because I thought I would wear them again someday. Then I got real with myself.....I haven't worn the blouses in 2 years!

It took me 15 minutes to create this donation pile. Wow, did that feel great. I won't even miss these clothes.

Have you tried to edit some stuff out of your life but find it very difficult? Does a voice inside your head give you conflicting messages during your attempts?

I should get rid of _________ but what if I need it again? I spent a lot of money on ________ so I should keep it. I can't decide so I'll just keep it or move it to a different spot in my home.

Here are 4 strategies to help you smother that voice that paralyzes you. These strategies will help you feel more comfortable about getting rid of stuff.

  • Share with friends or family. Has a friend or family member admired something you own more than you do? Pass it on; no strings attached. Tell them they may donate it when they no longer want it.
  • Exchange it for cash. Use Craig's List or Ebay to sell some of your items and earn some extra cash and space. craig's list   ebay
  • Donate your cast-offs to a charity that is meaningful to you. If you get a warm and fuzzy feeling by donating to certain organizations it will be painless and more rewarding. Find some meaningful charities in your area: libraries, schools, Goodwill, St. Vincent De Paul, nursing homes, human society, homeless shelters, women's shelters, food pantries, ect.
  • Have fun giving your stuff away. Yes, I did just say fun! I'm a big proponent of freecycle. You can give away just about anything by using this free internet group. It's fun to share with others and to witness their joy in receiving.

Are you ready to feel good about editing the stuff from your life? Now it's your turn to use these 4 strategies. Find 10 items you no longer need.

Hold onto the people in your life not the stuff.

Simply,
