Greetings!
Did you know September is National Preparedness Month?
Last year I wrote about creating a simple home inventory for insurance purposes and to help you recover your loses if any of your belongings are stolen or destroyed.
If you had to evacuate your home quickly due to a fire or other natural disaster wouldn't it be nice to have your vital documents and paperwork organized and ready to go with you? Prepare yourself and your family for such an event by putting together a Grab and Go Container.
Before I heard about a Grab and Go container my idea of being prepared was to grab my purse and head to the basement when I heard tornado sirens. I thought, at least I won't have to go to stand in line at the D.M.V. if I protect my purse. My daughter thinks I'm strange.
A Grab and Go box is a portable, sturdy container, usually a file box with a handle or a backpack. You want to be able to easily lift and carry it.
Protect the papers inside your container from water damage by placing them in Ziploc plastic bags.
Here is a checklist of items that should be included in your Grab and Go Container.

- A copy of your home inventory
- Back up keys to your house and car
- List of bills and when they are due
- A copy of your medical prescriptions including eye glasses
- A copy of your kid's immunization records
- A Copy of the front and back of all your credit cards and driver's license
- Copies of all insurance cards
- Copies of titles and deeds
- Copies of birth certificates, marriage certificates, divorce and military papers
- Copies of the last 2 years of your tax returns
- Computer back up disk
- Account numbers for all investment and bank accounts
- Safe deposit box key (keep one entrusted with a relative)
- Phone numbers of doctors, insurance companies, bank, and family members
- Some cash or a credit card
- Passports
- Social security numbers
- A current photo of family members
- Vet and pet medical information
- Loan and mortgage information
I realize this is a comprehensive list. Instead of trying to complete it all in one day, plan on checking off a couple items every few days and make it your family's goal to have it finished by a certain date.
After your checklist is complete and everything is in your Grab and Go container, place it in a convenient location where you can easily grab it in an emergency.
My hope for you is that you never have a need for your Grab and Go container but you can rest easy knowing you are prepared. |
